While institutional differences have been found to affect country growth patterns, much has remained unexplained, including how economic actors "overcome" institutional weaknesses and how internationalization helps or hinders development. Banking is an institutionally-intensive activity and the location decision of foreign banks provides a good test of how institutional differences are dealt with and how they may affect economic choices. Specifically, the authors examine whether banks seek out those markets where institutional familiarity provides them with a competitive advantage over other foreign competitor banks. Using bilateral data on banking sector foreign direct investment in all developing countries and controlling for other factors, they find that competitive advantage is an important factor in driving foreign banks' location decisions. The findings suggest that high institutional quality is not necessarily a prerequisite to attract foreign direct investment in banking and that there are specific benefits, as well as risks, to international financial integration between developing countries.
Familiarity with working in a specific institutional environment compared to its competitors can provide a firm with a competitive advantage, making it invest in specific host countries. We examine whether this notion of institutional competitive advantage drives banks to seek out specific markets. Using detailed, bilateral data of bank ownership for a large number of countries over 1995-2006 and using a first-difference model, we find that institutional competitive advantage importantly drives banks' location decisions. Results are robust to different samples and model specifications, various econometric techniques and alternative measures of institutional quality. This finding has some policy implications, including on the increased cross-border banking among developing countries.

The recent global financial turmoil raised questions about the stability of foreign banks' financing to emerging market countries. While foreign banks' lending growth to most emerging market regions contracted sharply, lending to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) was significantly more resilient. Analyzing detailed BIS data on global banks' lending to LAC countries-whether extended directly by their headquarters abroad or by their local affiliates in host countries-we show that the propagation of the global credit crunch was significantly more muted in countries where most of foreign banks' lending was channeled in domestic currency. We also show that foreign banks' involvement in LAC has differed in fundamental ways from that in other regions, with most of their lending to LAC conducted by their local subsidiaries, denominated in domestic currency and funded from a domestic deposit base. These characteristics help explain why LAC has not been struck as hard as other emerging markets by the global deleveraging and pullback in foreign banks' lending.
Since the mid-1990s, internationally active banks around the world have pursued policies to expand their presence in emerging markets. Growing volumes of cross border banking activities have triggered a burgeoning literature on financial FDI, mainly focused on merits and pitfalls of foreign-bank presence. Yet, little attention has been paid to how that presence is established. This paper aims to explain banks' location choices into emerging and transition markets from the perspective of the Italian banks. Entry decisions are analysed using ordered probit regressions that model organizational forms to be dependent on several quot;pushquot; and quot;pullquot; factors. The former apply to home country/sector characteristics motivating internationally active banks to expand their operations abroad. The latter refer to host country/sector features that amplify the attractiveness of domestic markets. The results validate most of the ex-ante expectations but pose some questions. Firstly, the quot;follow the clientquot; strategy appears fairly important but clearly not sufficient to explain the actual broadening of foreign activities of Italian banks. Second, the lack of significance of the variables representing risk, apart from the M2 ratio, together with the relevance of the index of comparative advantage in institutional quality requires further analyses on the spillovers from international banking activities, especially during crisis periods.

Meanwhile, as COVID- 19 runs rampant across the world, populism and deglobalisation have resurged, and protectionism and unilateralism are exerting negative impacts on the world economy. Achieving sustainable development in this context is a test of a company’s management and governance abilities. How should they be governed? This book will be a useful tool for university research-led teaching and fundamental research in corporate governance theories of MNEs in general, as well as using Chinese case studies as evidence to support our theoretical arguments.
