This book presents the results of a multi-annual project with sustainable Living Labs in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. Living Labs – as initiated by the authors – have proved to be very promising research, design, co-creation and communication facilities for the development and implementation of sustainable innovations in the home. The book provides an inspiring introduction to both the methodology and business modelling for the Living Lab facilities. Understanding daily living at home is key to designing products and services that support households in their transition to more sustainable lifestyles. This book not only explores new ways of gaining insights into daily practices, but also discusses developing and testing design methods to create sustainable solutions for households. These new methods and tools are needed because those available are either ineffective or cause rebound-effects. Intended for researchers and designers with an interest in the transition to sustainable lifestyles, it also appeals to company leaders interested in new ways of developing sustainable innovations and offers suggestions for effectively applying Living Labs for sustainable urban development.
All cities face a pressing challenge – how can they provide economic prosperity and social cohesion while achieving environmental sustainability? In response, new collaborations are emerging in the form of urban living labs – sites devised to design, test and learn from social and technical innovation in real time. The aim of this volume is to examine, inform and advance the governance of sustainability transitions through urban living labs. Notably, urban living labs are proliferating rapidly across the globe as a means through which public and private actors are testing innovations in buildings, transport and energy systems. Yet despite the experimentation taking place on the ground, we lack systematic learning and international comparison across urban and national contexts about their impacts and effectiveness. We have limited knowledge on how good practice can be scaled up to achieve the transformative change required. This book brings together leading international researchers within a systematic comparative framework for evaluating the design, practices and processes of urban living labs to enable the comparative analysis of their potential and limits. It provides new insights into the governance of urban sustainability and how to improve the design and implementation of urban living labs in order to realise their potential.
This book fills an important gap in the literature, and presents contributions from scientists and researchers working in the field of sustainable development who have engaged in dynamic approaches to implementing sustainability in higher education. It is widely known that universities are key players in terms of the implementation and further development of sustainability, with some having the potential of acting as “living labs” in this rapidly growing field. Yet there are virtually no publications that explore the living labs concept as it relates to sustainability, and in an integrated manner. The aims of this book, which is an outcome of the “4th World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities” (WSSD-U-2018), held in Malaysia in 2018, are as follows: i. to document the experiences of universities from all around the world in curriculum innovation, research, activities and practical projects as they relate to sustainable development at the university level; ii. to disseminate information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of projects, including successful initiatives and good practice; iii. to introduce and discuss methodological approaches and projects that seek to integrate the topic of sustainable development in the curricula of universities; and iv. to promote the scalability of existing and future models from universities as living labs for sustainable development. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and many reflect practice-based experiences, some of which may be replicable elsewhere. Also, this book, prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), reinforces the role played by universities as living labs for sustainable development.
Digital Participation through Social Living Labs connects two largely separate debates: On the one hand, high speed internet access and associated technologies are often heralded as a means to bring about not only connectivity, but also innovation, economic development, new jobs, and regional prosperity. On the other hand, community development research has established that access by itself is necessary but not sufficient to foster digital participation for the broadest possible range of individuals. Edited by leading scholars from the fields of education, youth studies, urban informatics, librarianship, communication technology, and digital media studies, this book is positioned as a link to connect these debates. It brings together an international collection of empirically grounded case studies by researchers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. They advance knowledge that fosters digital participation by identifying the specific digital needs, issues and practices of different types of communities as they seek to take advantage of access to digital technologies. Collectively, these cases propose new ways for enabling residents to develop their digital confidence and skills both at home and in their local community, particularly through a 'social living labs' approach. The book is organised around key focus areas: digital skills enhancement, youth entrepreneurship, connected learning, community digital storytelling, community-led digital initiatives and policy development. - Highlights that high speed internet is necessary that high speed internet access is necessary but not sufficient to resolve digital divides and foster social inclusion; - Brings together international, empirically grounded case studies to identify digital needs, issues and practices of different communities, and contextualises these with expert comment; - Presents contributions from multiple disciplines, with most chapters incorporating more than one disciplinary background; - Gives insight on the place of the digital in contemporary society; - Illustrates the innovative potential of social living labs to foster digital learning and participation in a variety of community contexts.
One of the major challenges for European governments is to solve the dilemma of increasing the security and reducing fraud in international trade, while at the same time reducing the administrative burden for commercial as well as public administration organisations. To address these conflicting demands, the ITAIDE project has developed a large set of innovative IT-related tools and methods that enable companies to be better in control of their business operations. These tools and methods have been integrated in the ITAIDE Information Infrastructure (I3) framework. By using the I3 framework, companies are better positioned to apply for the Trusted Trader status, and enjoy trade facilitation benefits such as simplified customs procedures and fewer inspections of their goods. Hence, the I3 framework can contribute to making global supply chains faster, cheaper, and more secure. The I3 framework has been tested and validated in five real-life Living Labs, spanning four different sectors of industry, and conducted in five different EU countries. National Tax & Customs organizations from various European countries have actively participated in the Living Labs. The United Nations CEFACT group, experts from the World Customs Organization and representatives of key industry associations have also provided valuable feedback and ideas for the Living Labs and the project in general. www.itaide.org
"Smart homes are domestic spaces outfitted with networked technology made by brands like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple. However, Silicon Valley purveyors are not the only important actors in smart home development. Appliance makers, logistics companies, health and wellness conglomerates, insurance companies, and security franchises are all betting on the smart home in an economy that puts a premium on data. Together, major players in the smart home space have successfully attracted the attention and pocketbooks of millions of households by touting the virtues of ambient, networked technologies as an upgrade to modern domestic life. If industry predictions hold, nearly half of American houses will be "smart" by 2024. Yet, what it means to be "smart" is still unsettled. Threshold asks and answers the question: How do smart homes communicate cultural values about the role of technology in the 21st century? Answering this question is time-sensitive, as the coming years will determine how smart homes are configured, who has access to them, and what they mean to their owners, policy makers, technology companies, and others invested in these domestic digital platforms. The consequences of these decisions are significant because they impact both smart home residents and society at large. At present, much of the research on smart homes caters either to industry experts or scientists and engineers. This literature often describes or evaluates the technical capacities of the smart home or focuses on user interface and design. Instead, Heather Woods argues, we need a sustained cultural analysis of smart homes that considers the socio-technical variables-gender, class, income disparity, race, criminal justice, the housing market, and the future of both labor and domesticity-that give the smart home meaning. Threshold takes up this challenge from a rhetorical perspective, arguing that smart homes are lived, material embodiments of the digital cultures in which they are imagined, built, and used. Those considerations, more often than not, are relegated to secondary considerations, when in truth they are the most pervasive and consequential factors affecting anyone participating in a smart home ecosystem. Woods argues that smart homes are spatial manifestations of a phenomenon called living in digitality, a cultural condition whereby users engage with technology at every moment of every day. Using extensive fieldwork at smart homes throughout the USA, Woods traces how smart homes urge ubiquitous computing as a normalized, daily practice, readying domestic spaces and their occupants for an increasingly transactional digital future that is largely controlled by corporate interests. Threshold advances knowledge in three ways, by: (1) Offering definitional tools for identifying and evaluating immersive technologies, including but not limited to the smart home (2) Identifying three distinct configurations of the smart home according to their domestic and technological functions (3) Demonstrating the productive capacity of smart homes (and smart devices) to influence social life The book highlights the rhetorical force of smart domesticity for rhetorical scholars, digital humanists, political scientists, critical theorists, policy makers, and residents or prospective residents of smart homes. Ultimately, Threshold serves as a toolkit for recognizing and responding to the persistent encroachment of digital technologies in all parts of our lives"--

There has been a surge in "Living Labs" in recent years including those focusing on the health and autonomy sectors. The aim of these innovative user-centered spaces is the emergence of products and services that meet market needs and support both the efficiency of public health and the competitiveness of enterprises. This book is the result of work involving both field practitioners and academic actors in human sciences and co-design. It highlights the good practices that arise within living labs despite their use of different approaches. This collaborative work has given rise to the Living Lab Health and Autonomy (LLSA) Forum and has allowed for an improved capacity to support an efficient development of this form of design for the actors of health and autonomy, but also of industry and of its investors. This book draws on their experience and the views of experts to illuminate their practices and gives better visibility and legibility to these new players.
