Elevations is a series of closely related essays on the ground-breaking philosophical and theological work of Emmanuel Levinas and Franz Rosenzweig, two of the twentieth century's most important Jewish philosophers. Focusing on the concept of transcendence, Richard A. Cohen shows that Rosenzweig and Levinas join the wisdom of revealed religions to the work of traditional philosophers to create a philosophy charged with the tasks of ethics and justice. He describes how they articulated a responsible humanism and a new enlightenment which would place moral obligation to the other above all other human concerns. He tackles this task by placing Levinas in conversation with philosophers such as Donald Davidson, Stanley Cavell, John McDowell, Onora O'Neill, Charles Taylor, and Cora Diamond. He also seeks to understand Levinas within philosophical, religious, and political developments in the history of twentieth-century intellectual culture. Morgan demystifies Levinas by examining his unfamiliar and surprising vocabulary, interpreting texts with an eye to clarity, and arguing that Levinas can be understood as a philosopher of the everyday. Morgan also shows that Levinas's ethics is not morally and politically irrelevant nor is it excessively narrow and demanding in unacceptable ways. Neither glib dismissal nor fawning acceptance, this book provides a sympathetic reading that can form a foundation for a responsible critique.

There is no greater testament to Emmanuel Levinas' reputation as an enigmatic thinker than in his meditations on eschatology and its relevance for contemporary thought. Levinas has come to be seen as a principal representative in Continental philosophy - alongside the likes of Heidegger, Benjamin, Adorno and Zizek - of a certain philosophical messianism, differing from its religious counterpart in being formulated apparently without appeal to any dogmatic content. To date, however, Levinas' messianism has not received the same detailed attention as other aspects of his wide ranging ethical vision. Terence Holden attempts to redress this imbalance, tracing the evolution of the messianic idea across Levinas' career, emphasising the transformations or indeed displacements which this idea undergoes in taking on philosophical intelligibility. He suggests that, in order to crack the enigma which this idea represents, we must consider not only the Jewish tradition from which Levinas draws inspiration, but also Nietzsche, who ostensibly would represent the greatest rival to the messianic idea in the history of philosophy, with his notion of the 'parody' of messianism.
Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig questioned the whole of Western philosophical tradition and tried to found a "new thinking" based on the Jewish-Christian concept of Revelation. System and Revelation, the first contemporary, comprehensive analysis of Rosenzweig's thinking, describes his philosophy as it is presented in his major work, The Star of Redemption, and highlights its relevance to postmodern thinking. The Star of Redemption, first published in 1921, has as its background World War I and the bloody collapse of traditional Europe and its values. In it, Rosenzweig attempted to elaborate a vast theoretical construction that was based upon the most specific categories of Judaism but tended nonetheless to universal signification. One of the central assertions of the book was that the history of the West, a history that is itself the last avatar of universal history, unavoidably rests upon violence and war. The first part of The Star of Redemption features a critique of Western rationality, which Moses analyzes with forcefulness and clarity. In the chapters devoted to the second part of The Star, Moses describes the coming into relation of the elements (God, Man, World) isolated by the breakup of the Hegelian totality. The third part of The Star describes Judaism and Christianity in their sociological reality--mainly through the analysis of their sacred time. Finally, the last chapter addresses the one Truth that transcends both Judaism and Christianity. Emphasizing the conceptual structures of Rosenzweig's philosophy, its references to cultural and historical data, as well as the implicit tensions that undermine the systematical coherence of this thinking, Moses underlines some of the most fundamental speculative gestures in Rosenzweig's thought. System and Revelation is neither Rosenzweig's spiritual biography nor a study of the whole of his work; rather it is a look at Rosenzweig's place within the history of contemporary philosophy through an analysis that is part exposition, part commentary, and part interpretation.

Levinas writes that Rosenzweig is too present in his work to be cited. This cryptic suggestion is unfolded into an in-depth confrontation. Both philosophers implement the same speculative gesture. Rosenzweig writes in post-Hegelian times; Levinas's thinking is enriched by phenomenology and marked by the Holocaust. Their critical exploration of the relationship to the infinite offers radically new perspectives on the language, the time and the other. The confrontation raises serious questions. How is a concept of alterity possible without accepting an identity? What are the concealed presuppositions?
