Jahrhunderts hatte man in England Interesse für die deutsche Literatur gezeigt, aber infolge des folgenden literarischen und politischen Tiefstandes Deutschlands war es bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahr hunderts fast ganz erloschen.1 Erst nachdem Friedrich der Große der Welt gezeigt hatte, was das kleine Preußen zu leisten vermöge, wobei England freilich nur als un zuverlässiger Bundesgenosse ihm beigestanden hatte, be strebte man sich dort wieder, etwas Näheres von diesem Lande zu erfahren. Dies gibt sich kund in dem erwachen den Interesse für deutsche Literatur, die gleichzeitig die ersten Anzeichen einer neuen Blüte erkennen ließ.
