Excerpt from Leaves From a Life I was born in the year 1848, and I only wish I could recollect the events of that stirring epoch. Naturally I cannot, but I have always had an idea that the storm and stress of the period, the unrest and upheaval of most things which occurred then, influenced me in some mysterious manner, and made me a rebel against most of the forms and ceremonies that in a great measure deform and cripple a most delightful world. Excerpt from American Leaves: Familiar Notes of Thought and Life The papers that make up this volume were written at leisure hours, of late years, on the spur of various occasions and experiences, and, with a single exception, they have in substance appeared in Harper's Monthly Magazine. They of course differ widely in style and topic, and range freely into various fields of thought and observation, yet they agree in being in close sympathy with American life in treating the struggles, fears, hopes, and aspirations of our common lot. There is no attempt at the regular order of an ethical or philosophical treatise, yet there is something of interior unity in the volume, and attentive readers may perhaps own that there is more of the reality than the show of careful and consistent thinking. Some thirteen years ago the Harper Brothers invited me to write for their Magazine, and I have done so more or less frequently since. If my humble experience is worth quoting, I will say honestly what has been the result of the effort. It seemed to me an awkward and difficult thing for a man perhaps over-scholastic in his thoughts and studies to write for the many in the most popular of American magazines, and I began with a good deal of diffidence. Now, after these years of occasional service, I can express my gratitude to the Monthly for two principal reasons - one of them expected, the other unexpected. Excerpt from Leaves From a Life-Book of to-Day Marion Bailey and Ralph Maynard. Nord ham was shocked and grieved. This was flying in the face of Providence, it said as soon as it recovered breath. Poor Mabel! And gathering up the broken pieces Of its happy romance, it cemented them with tears into a thrillingly tender tragedy, in which its favorite was moving about in its midst with a brave smile and an aching heart on her way to an early grave; while the strange household which Ralph had allowed himself to establish was sufiering the consequences Of not having inquired of Nordham what had been the original de signs Of Providence. Excerpt from Leaves of Life Day by day we add them, these Leaves of Life, to the great Book of Time. Let us endeavor to make each day's leaf a clean one, free of blotch or smear. If there be grief and failure let us trace it plainly, without fear or shame; if there be joy and success let it stand forth in all its glory, shorn of pride or false modesty. That which we do is ours, so let us strive to do it well, fearing neither man nor God; and at the end, when the final score is marked in the great Book of Time, we may look upon our work, and say simply, It is ours. Excerpt from Leaves From the Life of a Good-for-Nothing As I was looking around, a fine' travelling-carriage drove along very near me; it had probably been just behind me for some time without my perceiving it, so filled with melody had I been, for it was going quite slowly, and two elegant ladies had their heads out of the window, listening. One was especially beautiful, and younger than the other, but both pleased me extremely. When I stopped singing the elder ordered the coachman to stop his horses, and accosted me with great condescension, Aha, my merry lad, you know how to sing very pretty songs. I nothing loath, replied, Please your Grace, I know some far prettier. And where are you going so early in the morning she asked. I was ashamed to confess that I did not myself know, and so I said, boldly, To Vienna. The two ladies then talked together in a strange tongue which I did not understand. The younger shook her head several times, but the other only laughed, and finally called to me, Jump up behind; we too are going to Vienna. Who more ready than I! I made my best bow, and sprang up behind the carriage, the coachman cracked his whip, and away we bowled along the smooth road so swiftly that the wind whistled in my ears. Excerpt from Leaves From the Tree of Life: Sermons We must make distinct effort to realise habitually the true Significance and solemnity of life, if we are to buy up its opportunities. It needs such effort to lead a life apart from the hand-to-mouth life, moulded by sense and circumstance, which so many are con tent to live. It is a blessing when we get habit on the side of goodness, and all its mystical influences come to be as hedges to prevent our toppling over the precipice. But life is a poor affair unless we, realising its true significance and solemnity, do live each moment not by habit only, not mechanically, nor merely accepting the duty prescribed by our circumstances or avocations, but drawing nearer to Him who sends our opportunities, and so learning their summons and their importance. Excerpt from Leaves From Life These Leaves from Life, with a few Blossoms intertwined, are memorials of simple incidents and records of feelings, common at one time or another to most individuals, and to ordinary family circles. The histories of peaceful homes abound in touches of the poetical, amid much plain prose; and we all desire now and then to express and embody some domestic experiences, which would otherwise be forgotten. In arranging these pieces, composed at considerable intervals, they have fallen naturally into their places under various obvious emblems.
