This open access book presents theoretical and practical research relating to the vast, publicly financed program for the construction of new schools and the reorganization of existing educational buildings in Italy. This transformative process aims to give old buildings a fresh identity, to ensure that facilities are compliant with the new educational and teaching models, and to improve both energy efficiency and structural safety with respect to seismic activity. The book is divided into three sections, the first of which focuses on the social role of the school as a civic building that can serve the needs of the community. Innovations in both design and construction processes are then analyzed, paying special attention to the Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategy as a tool for the integration of different disciplines. The final section is devoted to the built heritage and tools, technologies, and approaches for the upgrading of existing buildings so that they meet the new regulations on building performance. Lomazzo's Aesthetic Principles Reflected in the Art of his Time explores the work of the Milanese artist-theorist Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo (1538–92) and his influence on the circle of the Accademia della Val di Blenio and beyond. Following reflections on Lomazzo's fortuna critica, the accompanying essays examine his admiration of Gaudenzio Ferrari; Lomazzo’s painted oeuvre; his influence on printmaking with Giovanni Ambrogio Brambilla; on drawing and painting with Aurelio Luini; on the decorative arts and the embroideress Caterina Cantoni; his pupils Giovanni Ambrogio Figino and Girolamo Ciocca; grotesque sculpture outside Milan; and Lomazzo in England with Richard Haydocke’s translation of the Trattato. In doing so, this book takes an innovative approach—one which aims to bridge the scholarship, hitherto disjoined, between Lomazzo the artist and Lomazzo the theorist—while expanding our knowledge of a protagonist of Renaissance and early modern art theory. Drawing on some sixty works and for the first time, the Museo del Prado will jointly present the most important paintings by Sofonisba Anguissola (ca. 1535-1625) and Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614). The two artists achieved recognition and fame among their contemporaries for and despite their status as female painters. Both were able to break away from the prevailing stereotypes assigned to women in relation to artistic practice and the deep-rooted scepticism regarding women's creative and artistic abilities.The exhibition and accompanying catalogue will present the work of these two women, whose artistic personalities were to some extent obscured over the course of time but who in the last thirty years have once again aroused the interest of specialists and the general public.

Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) built his visual lexicon from the most minimal of props--dust-covered bottles, bowls, vases, pitchers, tins and boxes. From it, he composed delicious permutations of quiet still lifes, in the most muted yet luminous of palettes, transforming the genre of still life into a cosmos. The composer Morton Feldman once wrote that in his own work he was "interested in getting to Time in its unstructured existence... How Time exists before we put our paws on it," and in this sense Morandi may be his counterpart in paint: his painted objects seem to possess a subtle self-sufficiency and interiority. Accompanying a recent exhibition at the Phillips Collection, Washington D.C., this beautifully designed catalogue contains a selection of reproductions buttressed with two essays by Morandi experts: Flavio Fergonzi appraises the myths that have attached to Morandi, the history of his critical reception and the cities with which the artist was particularly associated; Elisabetta Barisoni discusses Morandi's reception in America.
Uniting the long-dispersed 16 panels of a complex Renaissance masterwork Between the years 1471 and 1472, Italian Renaissance artists Francesco del Cossa (c. 1430- c. 1477) and Ercole de' Roberti (c. 1451-96) completed a multipanel piece commissioned by the patrons of the Basilica di San Petronio in Bologna. Composed of 16 poplar panels, the masterpiece honored Saint Vincent Ferrer, who had been canonized two decades earlier, rendered in exquisite colors and precious gold. In the early 18th century, however, the altarpiece was dismantled and each panel cut down into individual paintings which were then dispersed globally among collectors over the course of the next century. Today, the separate panels are owned by nine different museums, from Washington, DC, to its native Italy. This volume presents an investigation of the storied polyptych and its historical and philological dimensions, including a reconstruction of the plausible organization of the original altarpiece.
