When, why and how can religion and culture be both sources, and places of expression for fundamentalisms, particularly in relation to politics? Those are the central questions asked throughout this book alongside a discussion on the result when religion, strenthened by culture, is used as a political tool to access moral and social power. Cultural and religious messages often form the basis of decisions, laws and programs made in politics, and have a direct effect on society in general, and on women and gender relations in particular. The various forms taken by fundamentalisms in some African countries and the contexts under which they have emerged, the ways in which they (re)shape identities and relationships between men and women are also analysed in this book. These fundamentalisms are frequently sources of concern in social debates, in feminist and feminine organizations as well as in academia and politics. The manipulation of cultures and religions are becoming progressively political, and consequently can cause social discrimination, or even physical, moral, and symbolic violence.

Clément d’Alexandrie (150-215 Ap. J.-C.) est l’un des penseurs les plus brillants des premiers siècles chrétiens. Son enseignement, tout autant pétri de la Bible que de la pensée grecque, nous révèle la nature des débats aux premières heures de l’expansion du christianisme. Ce livre aborde un sujet peu étudié à ce jour, à savoir sa pensée sur l’Église. C’est pourtant un sujet récurent de ses ouvrages, où il réfléchit longuement sur l’Église à partir de l’être et la mission du Logos divin. L’analyse du discours de Clément sur l’Église permet donc de revisiter les intuitions principales de sa christologie tout en apportant un éclairage sur sa perception de l’identité chrétienne à une époque où celle-ci est encore en construction. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement’s discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.

The establishment of Latin Christianity in Poland had a profound impact on its development, and this is the subject of the present volume. The articles range from surveys tracing the main phases of this evolution and the Church’s expansion between the 10th and the 16th centuries, to particular studies of parish organisation and the role of the monastic orders - above all the Mendicants, whose importance Professor Kloczowski considers has been much underestimated. In addition, he has also been concerned to relate developments in Poland to those in the neighbouring parts of east-central Europe, in Bohemia, Hungary and, later, in Lithuania, and to trace the ties linking the area with the West, and especially with Italy. La fondation de la chrétienté latine en Pologne a eu un impact profond sur son développement; ceci forme le sujet du présent volume. Les articles vont d’évaluations retraçant les principales phases de cette évolution et de l’expansion de l’Eglise entre le 10e et le 16e siècle, à des études spécifiques sur l’organisation paroissiale et le rôle des ordres monastiques - surtout les Mendiants, dont l’importance, selon le professeur Kloczowski, a été beaucoup trop sousestimée. Il s’est aussi attaché à établir les rapports entre les développements en Pologne et ceux dans les parties avoisinantes de l’Europe de l’Est centrale, en Bohème, en Hongrie et, plus tard, en Lithuanie.
