Rural and remote communities have long been challenging health care settings that rely on distant metropolises to supply their health workforce. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine, a pioneering faculty of medicine founded in 2005, was established to realise the potential of the rich learning environments found in such communities. Volume Two of this retrospective bibliography is both a continuation and an expansion of Volume One (1984). It contains references to Canadian medical-historical literature published between 1984 and 1998, and also includes much additional material published prior to 1984. Finally, it substantially enlarges the content of French-language material. Every effort has been made to be as inclusive as possible of articles, theses, book chapters and books, both in English and in French, relating to the history of medicine. No single electronic source can replace this bibliography. The contents are divided into three sections. The first is a listing of material expressly biographical. Section two lists material under a wide variety of subject headings related to medicine, and the third is a complete listing of the authors who have contributed these articles. Simply organized and easy to use, this bibliography will be of value to historians, archivists, librarians, and anyone interested in the history of medicine.
The Health Transition Fund, a joint federal, provincial, & territorial effort to encourage & support evidence-based decision-making in health care reform, funded about 140 pilot projects and evaluation studies over 1997-2001 in nine theme areas. This report summarizes key learnings from 33 projects in the Fund's rural health/telehealth theme area. Introductory sections set the context for the projects (including background on rural health services in Canada) and provide an overview of the Fund's studies under that theme area. The report then discusses significant & relevant findings of projects that examined such issues as access to health services, special approaches for addressing rural health difficulties, service integration, health determinants, uses & benefits of telehealth, and health human resources. Finally, major problems & unresolved issues in the Fund projects and the implications of the findings for policy & practice are discussed. The appendix summarizes information on the Fund projects relevant to rural health & telehealth.

This is the story of how 800,000 citizens created their own school of medicine, and what it has meant for the region and its people. Northern Ontario is a vast territory — almost as big as France and Germany combined — with a widely scattered population the size of only 10% of the rest of the province. Rich in forests, minerals, scenery and brilliant, hardy people, Ontario’s north, like many other rural and remote areas, had difficulties attracting and keeping doctors. The solution, they decided, was to train their own. An astonishing percentage of graduates remain to serve the unique needs of their home communities, from rural, to Indigenous, to Francophone. Over the course of twenty years, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine has transformed healthcare and created a legacy of a school that is far from ordinary.
