Excerpt from Journal of the House of Representatives of the Sixteenth General Assembly of the State of Illinois: At Their Regular Session, Begun and Held at Springfield, January 1, 1849 Although our enquiries and our exertions ought mainly to be directed to the future, we may still be allowed to indulge in some degree of self-congratulation in reviewing our past action in this matter. During the gloomiest hour of our financial prospects, when the most sanguine might have recoiled before the se verity of the crisis, the people never for a moment faltered in the manifestation of an unshrinking resolution to lay all their resources under contribution to xc deem the plighted faith of the state. Our subsequent course harmonised with this resolution; for so soon as the storm began to abate, even before we had full time to survey the extent of the ruin around us, we struck boldly forward with a system suited to our condition, and which served as a nucleus to a more vigor ous and expanded effort. Such, in general, has been our course under the many dificulties we have encountered, that our creditors entertain a strong confidence in our integrity and sense of justice.
