A forbidden passion!
This volume addresses the current boom in biographical fictions across the globe, examining the ways in which gendered lives of the past become re-imagined as gendered narratives in fiction. Building on this research, this book is the first to address questions of gender in a sustained and systematic manner that is also sensitive to cultural and historical differences in both raw material and fictional reworking. It develops a critical lens through which to approach biofictions as ‘fictions of gender’, drawing on theories of biofiction and historical fiction, life-writing studies, feminist criticism, queer feminist readings, postcolonial studies, feminist art history, and trans studies. Attentive to various approaches to fictionalisation that reclaim, appropriate or re-invent their ‘raw material’, the volume assesses the critical, revisionist and deconstructive potential of biographical fictions while acknowledging the effects of cliché, gender norms and established narratives in many of the texts under investigation. In name only? Red McGee hadn't got her nickname for nothing. Her hair was as red-hot as her temper. Linus Hunt didn't particularly like her hair or her temper. He liked his life calm, orderly and businesslike. And Red was disorderly, chaotic and... well, just too passionate!

He was about to marry another woman... Raine had fallen in love with Nick Marlowe, not knowing that the tall, brooding American was anything but available. It seemed their brief affair had been just his last-minute fling. Still, the experience had taught a valuable lesson: passion was deadly. She was about to marry another man...
"Your husband loves another woman."
"Exploring the contradictions surrounding modern-day femininity and its complicated relationship with feminism and postfeminism, this book provides a history of femininity in popular culture since the 1960s, analysing its shifting relationship with (post)feminism and concepts of female victimization. Through an examination of a range of popular female and feminist icons and paradigms, the text offers an innovative and forward-looking perspective on femininity and the modern female self. The book marks an important cross-generational moment in feminist thinking that challenges us to re-think previous conceptions of femininity and debate critical issues that remain unresolved in contemporary culture: does femininity necessarily imply powerlessness and victimization? Can femininsm and femininity co-exist? What emerges between these previously opposed extremes?" -- Book cover.
