Forty-three of the finest songs by foremost lute performer and composer of the early 17th century; includes two dances for solo guitar, original lute tablature, and complete song texts.
"Spring focuses on the lute in Britain, but also includes two chapters devoted to continental developments: one on the transition from medieval to renaissance, the other on renaissance to baroque, and the lute in Britain is never treated in isolation. Six chapters cover all aspects of the lute's history and its music in England from 1285 to well into the eighteenth century, whilst other chapters cover the instrument's early history, the lute in consort, lute song accompaniment, the theorbo, and the lute in Scotland."--Jacket.
Affordable, handsomely engraved edition contains 45 songs by foremost lute player of the early 17th century, transcribed for voice and guitar. Includes three airs from A Musicall Banquet.
Playbook.
Dowland's Lachrimae (1604) is perhaps the greatest but most enigmatic publication of instrumental music from before the eighteenth century. This new handbook, the first detailed study of the collection, investigates its publication history, its instrumentation, its place in the history of Renaissance dance music, and its reception history. Two extended chapters examine the twenty-one pieces in the collection in detail, discussing the complex internal relationships between the cycle of seven 'Lachrimae' pavans, the relationships between them and other pieces inside and outside the collection, and possible connections between the Latin titles of the seven pavans and Elizabethan conceptions of melancholy. The extraordinarily multi-faceted nature of the collection also leads the author to illuminate questions of patronage, the ordering and format of the collection, pitch and transposition, tonality and modality, and even numerology.
Ten Songs by English Renaissance composer-lutenist-singer John Dowland, arranged for voice and classical guitar (in standard notation and tablature). Includes: Away with These Self-Loving Lads, Come Again Sweet Love, Come Heavy Sleep, Dear If You Change, Flow My Tears, Go Crystal Tears, If My Complaints, The Lowest Trees Have Tops, Weep You No More, Who Ever Thinks or Hopes. Note: These arrangements have been transposed down from the original keys, and, as such, they are most suitable for soloists with an alto or bass (8vb) range. For sopranos and tenors (8vb), guitarist uses capo to raise pitch a few steps to singer's desired key.
This book is aimed at beginner lute and guitar players interested in playing Renaissance lute music on either instrument. Lute and guitar tablature are included, along with notes on technique, biographies of lute composers from the 16th century, and general advice on buying, stringing and tuning a lute. The book starts with single-line melodies, before progressing to two-part and full repertoire pieces. Selections include works by great Renaissance composers such as John Dowland, Francesco da Milano, Alonso Mudarra, Francesco Spinacino and others, with music from England, Scotland, Italy, France and Germany. A useful chord chart is also included. Every piece in the book has been recorded for download by Rob MacKillop--in itself, an album worth owning. Includes access to online audio.
This is the first in-depth study in any language exploring the vast cultural range of instrumental music during the Renaissance.
