Excerpt from An Introduction to the New Testament, Vol. 1 This holds true to a certain extent, though only partially, of modern works, because we ourselves, as contemporaries, are surrounded by the same relations, and must in some degree be acquainted with the circumstances and events of our day. Facts which we are ignorant of, and which it is desirable we should know, are generally stated by the author himself in his preface, and any further introduction is usually unneces sary. But the need for such an introduction arises soon after, indeed sometimes immediately after, the appearance of a work, especially if the events and circumstances of the time are closely connected with the subject treated of, or if the author has seen fit to conceal his own position and rela tionships. Much more is such an introduction requisite in the case of works written in places, circumstances, or times unknown to us or distant from us, as e.g. In the case of the Greek and Latin classics. Here it is usual to prefix a longer or shorter introduction before the more direct exposition of the text. And, in like manner, it is customary to prefix to the several books of Holy Scripture brief essays or state ments concerning their origin, their authorship, their design and contents, their genuineness and integrity, the works used in the exposition, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Introduction to the New Testament, Vol. 1 The republic of letters is at prefent in poltefiion of knowledge, of which it had no idea in the middle of this century; and I may venture to affirm, that the lali mentioned period bears the fame analogy to the year 1787, as the fiate of infancy to that of manhood. Excerpt from Introduction to the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 3 Of a priori constructions of every kind, and more attention to material and personal details, which were inserted quite unconsciously on the part of the New Testament writers, but which are of inestimable value to us, because frequently they afford us a better insight than do leading ideas, into the connection between literary remains and the circum stances and conditions under which they were produced. This development of the historical sense among theologians has redounded to the benefit of my Intro duction. In one Of the reviews of the first volume of the first edition the reviewer made the conjecture that owing to the great bulk of the work the circulation would not be wide. The conjecture has not proved true. The English translation of the third German edition now completed is to me an encouraging confirmation of the hope with which I ventured to dedicate the first edition to the University of Cambridge. I can only hope that the great and self-denying efforts which the translators have made may be rewarded by a corresponding influence of the work in the wide English-speaking world. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Writings of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 Under these impressions I submit this Intro duction to your Lordship's notice, as a work, which has successfully combated several of the arguments which Ihave been urged against the Sacred Canon, which has*verified and elucidated important passages, which have long been the subjects of controversy, and irrefutably proved the authenticity of those inspired Writings, to which our Church refers, as the rule of its con duct and the basis of its principles. Excerpt from A Manual of Introduction to the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 On the other hand I have entire respect for all earnest scientific enquiry, even when it takes another direction than what appears to me correct; and I am not satisfied with a peremptory rejection Of its results. I have endeavoured throughout to follow the history Of scientific research as closely as possible into each separate question, and to present it to the reader. I have also allowed -a hearing to the Opposite view, with its reasons, and have endeavoured fmm history itself to learn-and to teach how it may be refuted, though in every instance I look for the chief decision from the positive statement Of the case agreeably to the sources from which it is drawn. The dependence on traditional premises, which is as great On the critical as on the apolo getic side, I have now as ever fearlessly resisted, even where it is most confidently asserted. I do not profess toihave enumerated all views, or mentioned all the names inciden tally in favour of this or that Opinion, even where such names may be renowned. Of actual fellow-workers on the problems Of the New Testament I hope I have forgotten none. But I have not been able to follow up foreign liter ature to any extent. Excerpt from An Introduction to the New Testament The limitations of this volume are imposed by the editor. Even the mere outline, which alone is pos sible in the narrowly prescribed space, might be made fairly complete if technical terminology, abbreviation. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: Critical, Exegetical, and Theological Since the first edition appeared, the chief work on Introduction to the New Testament has been Hilgenfeld's 'Einleitung, ' the outcome of many books and essays published by that indefatigable scholar. His 'Zeit-schrift' also presents valuable critical investigations by the editor himself, Professor Holtzmann, and others, all tending to illustrate the Christian Scriptures. Mangold supplies useful additions to Bleek's ' Introduction.' Professor Reuss's recent publications on the New Testament are somewhat disappointing, savouring as they do of the Vermittelungs-Theologie, and influenced to some extent by a reactionary spirit towards the Tubingen school. Though this school as represented by Baur and Schwegler has carried its speculations too far, the important advance it has made in the criticism of the New Testament cannot be reversed. Modified it may be; but its mark upon early Christian literature is deep and permanent. In correcting its excesses moderation must be carefully preserved, for examples of backwardism are usually weak. A few faults of the 'Tendenz-Kritik' leave its basis secure.
