In the first study of its kind about the role played by intimate memory in the mourning literature of late imperial China, Martin W. Huang focuses on the question of how men mourned and wrote about women to whom they were closely related. Drawing upon memoirs, epitaphs, biographies, litanies, and elegiac poems, Huang explores issues such as how intimacy shaped the ways in which bereaved male authors conceived of womanhood and how such conceptualizations were inevitably also acts of self-reflection about themselves as men. Their memorial writings reveal complicated self-images as husbands, brothers, sons, and educated Confucian males, while their representations of women are much more complex and diverse than the representations we find in more public genres such as Confucian female exemplar biographies.

In the thirty-five years following Lincoln’s assassination, acquaintances of Lincoln published their memories of him in newspapers, biographies, and edited collections in order to gain fame, promote partisan aims, champion his hardscrabble past and exalted rise, and define his legacy. Shawn Parry-Giles and David Kaufer explore how style, class, and character affected these reminiscences. They also analyze the ways people used these writings to reinforce their beliefs about citizenship and presidential leadership in the United States, with specific attention to the fissure between republicanism and democracy that still exists today. Their study employs rhetorical and corpus research methods to assess more than five hundred reminiscences. Most of the physical, emotional, and behavioral patterns that create pain and suffering in our lives are caused by the blockages of lifeforce flowing through our body-mind systems. This is usually the result of traumatic ancestral, prenatal and early childhood experiences that are repressed from conscious thought, yet remain active in the memory of our cells. Over the years, we become conditioned by these un-conscious patterns of repressed pain and trauma. We believe they define who we really are. We often defensively declare: it's "me", "myself", "that's just the way I am", or "I can't help it". The external circumstances they attract to us, we indifferently say: "that's my life".An adult self-image based on a false set of assumptions and beliefs will negatively impact everything that happens to us. We feel this as chronic contractions in our body's energy field or what is often called: the pain body. This adversely affects the way we perceive life, our relationships, work and our health. When life force is contracted in the pain body, life appears tight and dangerous and we must fight or flight constantly. When this is healed, life is expanding, creative and flowing. Configuring Memory in Czech Family Sagas: The Art of Forgetting in Generic Tradition explores how literature may configure family memory. Family sagas can be viewed as a structure helping us to share our memories. Special attention will be paid to crucial generic motifs within family sagas, as well as to elements of the narrative structure, which hold powerful memory-forming potential. The book proves that this potential can be fulfilled in two ways. The genre under analysis tends to strengthen the “bad family memory” and consider it as a burden, and to encourage one to forget their family past. Despite the prevalence of the saga as a cultural form right across mass media, the literary genre of the family saga has not attracted intensive critical acclaim. Readers of this book will not only learn more about the genre of family saga but also be encouraged to reflect on their own family memories.
