Intercultural Education: Critical Perspectives, Pedagogical Challenges, and Promising Practices, co-edited by Cinzia Pica-Smith, Carmen N. Veloria and Rina Manuela Contini, is an edited volume that brings together scholars from across the globe who delve critically into the frameworks of interculturalism and intercultural education to go beyond the European context, to reorient our perspectives on the frameworks and engage in new conversations across various institutional contexts and countries. The scholars in this volume explore and critique intercultural education on localized alliances, epistemologies, pedagogy, multi-sector collaborations, and language policies. Some scholars contextualize this phenomenon by acknowledging the on-going struggles for recognition, representation, and heritage language maintenance; while others write about the institutionalization that brings about warped narratives, produces challenges and tensions, and the interplay of power dynamics that impacts practice which is ultimately felt most by practitioners and students. Finally, authors move beyond this critique by working with diverse communities, expanding the dialogue to include multiple perspectives, and promoting the adaptation of indigenous practices in new ways.The scholar-practitioners in this collection engage with the theory and practice of intercultural education to describe, interrogate, critique, and put forth recommendations for future iterations of policy and practice. In Polish and Czech pedagogy, there have not been many studies on the social, cultural and educational functioning of academic youth in a culturally diversified environment. The analysis of identity behaviours presented by university students from the Polish-Czech borderland and of their learning potentialities will provide a chance for mutual recognition, understanding and the enrichment of both cultures – along with providing a chance for cultural sensitization. Due to the applied culturalization attitudes, this will also enhance the participation in the culture of the neighbouring country and the shortening of cultural distance. Such studies are also associated with a reflection upon the way in which a contemporary human understands cultural dimensions, the role they play in human life and the scope in which they shape the individual’s own and their social/cultural identity.
The societies of the twenty-first century are subject to social, cultural, political, and economic changes. In this context, the school is asked to educate the future citizens in the present. To respond to this kaleidoscopic reality, the school is immersed in a pedagogical revolution. In this book, the reader will find a selection of avant-garde research works from different disciplines and contexts, which have their epicenter in the school and in the faculties of education. New issues in pedagogy and education, and new roles of teachers and students, are discussed in a global and diverse context. And new methodological and formative proposals are also proposed to build the ideal school and the ideal teacher, from the initial and continuous teacher training.
The issues which are discussed in the 29 chapters of this volume address core matters with respect to modern diverse societies. The most important relate to the following: the societal needs of migrant populations and the educational needs of their children; the exclusivist policies which usually impact upon migrant groups; the need to enrich school texts and curricula with new intercultural and citizenship dimensions; the importance of integrating the notion of Paideia within the school ethos and educational programmes. This volume has a dual aim. The first aim is to envisage the field of Multicultural and Intercultural Education from different disciplines at the international level, describing the new educational and social conditions that have been created by recent migration and identifying new trends in the field. The second aim is to highlight the importance of Multicultural and Intercultural Education in the development of a new citizen, who moves around the world, interacting with different people, and has a dynamic and flexible identity with polymorphic personal, social and cultural characteristics – a new intercultural persona. To sum up, this volume highlights that authors coming from different continents share some common ideas and tend to believe in the notion of Intercultural/Multicultural Education as a useful new dimension within the dynamics of many disciplines, as a new inter-disciplinary approach that is embedded within them and which characterizes modern societies.
