When it comes to party institutionalisation - at least for entrepreneurial right-wing protest parties -- leadership matters! That is the primary takeaway from this book. Of the hundreds of new parties that have formed since the 1970s, many have fallen by the wayside, but others have gone on to reach institution-hood. And some of the latter have then met with decay and de-institutionalisation. The experiences of the Progress Parties of Denmark and Norway - both of which institutionalised and one of which then de-institutionalised - shed important light on both topics. While focusing particularly on those two cases, the authors develop conceptual and theoretical frameworks that are broadly applicable, as demonstrated in the final chapter and in an elaborate appendix.
This volume collects papers that explore institutionalisation in contemporary transatlantic relations. Policymakers, lawyers, and political scientists reflect on contemporary understandings of the process as an integration of regimes and orders from an EU perspective. The papers assess whether contemporary transatlantic relations call for a different approach to global governance with a heightened emphasis on institutionalisation. The book explores a diverse range of case studies of interest to a broad readership. In particular, it focuses upon two cutting-edge issues: transatlantic data privacy rules that are emerging after the post-Edward Snowdon / NSA / PRISM revelations; and trade aspects, especially the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) Agreement. The contributors consider these case studies from a variety of perspectives, honing in on the dynamism, method, and high politics of transatlantic relations as they have recently evolved. They critically explore the commonly held assumption that transatlantic relations have historically been considered quasi-institutionalised at best or, at worst, lacking in terms of laws and institutions. Is institutionalisation a useful meeting point for all disciplines? Does it explain regional integration meaningfully across subjects? Can institutionalisation serve to promote accountability and good governance? Contributors across disciplines and subjects address these increasingly challenging and salient questions.
Using examples from Poland, Elżbieta Drążkiewicz explores the question of why states become donors and individuals decide to share their wealth with others through foreign aid. She comes to the conclusion that the concept of foreign aid requires the establishment of a specific moral economy which links national ideologies and local cultures of charitable giving with broader ideas about the global political economy. It is through these processes that faith in foreign aid interventions as a solution to global issues is generated. The book also explores the relationship linking a state institution with its NGO partners, as well as international players such as the EU or OECD.
This book examines two civic initiatives in Europe and analyses their evolution through the institutionalisation of their practices, local public effects, and established models for action at broader scales. It also explores how local initiatives establish national and international networks and models for direct civic action. This is the second of four volumes of the compendium The Institutionalisation of Evaluation. The first volume on Europe was published in 2020. It will be followed by two more volumes on Asia Pacific, and Africa. The overall aim is to provide an interdisciplinary audience with cross-country learning to enable them to better understand the institutionalisation of evaluation in different nations, world regions and sectors.

This edited collection builds directly upon the recently published book by Harmel, Svåsand, and Mjelde (Institutionalisation (and De-Institutionalisation) of Right-Wing Protest Parties: The Progress Parties in Denmark and Norway) and applies their conceptual framework to a wide range of additional cases. Employing a common conceptual framework throughout, the chapters cover a broad range of cases and make important contributions toward building theories on why some parties succeed in institutionalising while others fail. The book is primarily about the status some parties achieve as an 'institution', the means by which parties may acquire that status, and some of the obstacles that stand in their way.
,The papers in this collection, written by a cross-regional group of experts, provide insights into the causes of declining levels of citizen participation and other distinct forms of civic activism in Europe and explore a range of factors contributing to apathy and eventually disengagement from vital political processes and institutions. At the same time, this volume examines informal or unconventional types of civic engagement and political participation corresponding to the rapid advances in culture, technology and social networking. The volume is divided into three interrelated parts: Part I consists of critical essays in the form of theoretical approaches to analysing weakening political participation and citizen estrangement; Part II is dedicated to an exploration of the role and deployment of technologically advanced media, such as the internet, as determinants of changing patterns of political participationist behaviour. Finally, Part III presents findings of empirical research on the issue of political participation.
