Two main themes are addressed in this volume: Expanding the Power of the Personal Computer, and Enhancing Intelligence in Informational Systems. For the first time in IFIP's history, special attention is being given to the field of Personal Computers (PCs). For more than a hundred million people internationally, these machines are the gateway to the world of computer-aided work. The enormous impact of personal computing on society has made this area a focus of attention for the computer industry as a whole. Not surprisingly, the tremendous expansion in the ways in which personal computers are applied poses many new and interesting technical challenges. The second theme of this volume has become an even more important area of research given the broader community of users made possible by PCs. The problems of incorporating human knowledge and decision-making skills into intelligent information systems are among the most interesting and difficult of those facing system designers. This volume concludes with a discussion of various ways to conduct cooperative research programs in line with IFIP's role as a facilitator of collaboration between academia and industry.

This volume contains the proceedings of the thirteenth biennial International Conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI XIII), held on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, in June 1993. This conference was the latest in a series of meetings where new developments in the acquisition, analysis and utilization of medical images are presented, discussed, dissected, and extended. Today IPMI is widely recognized as a preeminent international forum for presentation of cutting-edge research in medical imaging and imageanalysis. The volume contains the text of the papers presented orally atIPMI XIII. Over 100 manuscripts were submitted and critically reviewed, of which 35 were selected for presentation. In this volume they are arranged into nine categories: shape description with deformable models, abstractshape description, knowledge-based systems, neural networks, novel imaging methods, tomographic reconstruction, image sequences, statistical pattern recognition, and image quality.
