The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) is the worldwide organization of societies which are dedicated primarily or significantly to applied and/or industrial mathematics. The ICIAM Congresses, held every 4 years, are run under the auspices of the Council with the aim to advance the applications of mathematics in all parts of the world. The Sixth ICIAM Congress was held in Zurich, Switzerland, July 16-20, 2007, and was attended by more than 3000 scientists from 47 countries. This volume collects the invited lectures of this Congress, the appreciations of the ICIAM Prize winners' achievements, and the Euler Lecture celebrating the 300th anniversary of Euler. The authors of these papers are leading researchers in their fields, rigorously selected by a distinguished international program committee. The book presents an overview of contemporary applications of mathematics, new perspectives, and open problems. Robust control has been a topic of active research in the last three decades culminating in H_2/H_\infty and \mu design methods followed by research on parametric robustness, initially motivated by Kharitonov's theorem, the extension to non-linear time delay systems, and other more recent methods. The two volumes of Recent Advances in Robust Control give a selective overview of recent theoretical developments and present selected application examples. Handbook of Numerical Methods for Hyperbolic Problems explores the changes that have taken place in the past few decades regarding literature in the design, analysis and application of various numerical algorithms for solving hyperbolic equations. This volume provides concise summaries from experts in different types of algorithms, so that readers can find a variety of algorithms under different situations and readily understand their relative advantages and limitations.
In this book, the theory, methods and applications of separable optimization are considered. Some general results are presented, techniques of approximating the separable problem by linear programming problem, and dynamic programming are also studied. Convex separable programs subject to inequality/ equality constraint(s) and bounds on variables are also studied and convergent iterative algorithms of polynomial complexity are proposed. As an application, these algorithms are used in the implementation of stochastic quasigradient methods to some separable stochastic programs. The problems of numerical approximation of tabulated functions and numerical solution of overdetermined systems of linear algebraic equations and some systems of nonlinear equations are solved by separable convex unconstrained minimization problems. Some properties of the Knapsack polytope are also studied. This second edition includes a substantial amount of new and revised content. Three new chapters, 15-17, are included. Chapters 15-16 are devoted to the further analysis of the Knapsack problem. Chapter 17 is focused on the analysis of a nonlinear transportation problem. Three new Appendices (E-G) are also added to this edition and present technical details that help round out the coverage. Applications in modern biotechnology and molecular medicine often require simulation of biomolecular systems in atomic representation with immense length and timescales that are far beyond the capacity of computer power currently available. As a consequence, there is an increasing need for reduced models that describe the relevant dynamical properties while at the same time being less complex. In this book the authors exploit the existence of metastable sets for constructing such a reduced molecular dynamics model, the so-called Markov state model (MSM), with good approximation properties on the long timescales. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the exact boundary controllability of nodal profile, a new kind of exact boundary controllability stimulated by some practical applications. This kind of controllability is useful in practice as it does not require any precisely given final state to be attained at a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls, instead it requires the state to exactly fit any given demand (profile) on one or more nodes after a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls. In this book we present a general discussion of this kind of controllability for general 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems and for general 1-D quasilinear wave equations on an interval as well as on a tree-like network using a modular-structure construtive method, suggested in LI Tatsien's monograph "Controllability and Observability for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems"(2010), and we establish a complete theory on the local exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for 1-D quasilinear hyperbolic systems.
