A Roma tra i primi decenni del IV secolo e la prima metà del XIV secolo (quindi nell'arco di circa 1000 anni) furono costruite 549 chiese, delle quali 145 sono ancora esistenti, seppure nel corso dei secoli modificate, ampliate, restaurate, ricostruite almeno parzialmente. Per ogni chiesa si sono forniti i principali dati storici, relativi al periodo di costruzione, di restauri o ricostruzioni, di eventuale scomparsa, e si è indicata la zona topografica. Queste 549 chiese (basiliche, oratori, cappelle) sono state dedicate a 168 santi, vissuti tra il I e l'inizio del XIII secolo, per ognuno dei quali si ricostruisce brevemente la vita e la santità. Una raccolta di chiese, in gran parte scomparse, e di santi, molti dei quali dimenticati, per ricostruire una parte essenziale di Roma medievale e della sua religiosità.
Prominently located on the Arx, the northern summit of the Capitoline hill, S. Maria in Aracoeli is the most significant medieval church of Rome to survive to the present day. Second major church of the Lesser Brothers or fratres minores in the Italian peninsula, and Roman headquarters of the Order, the Aracoeli played a vital role in the interaction between the Franciscans and the papacy, the friars and the laity, and the religious and civic authorities, as reflected in its art and architecture. On the basis of an interdisciplinary approach combining archaeological analysis with the finding of new archival evidence, reinterpretation of documents and literary and epigraphic sources, this book offers a reconstruction of the original church, its monuments and its Benedictine as well as eighth/ninth-century predecessors, which differs radically from earlier hypotheses. This reassessment in turn allows the author to revisit a number of major questions, including the Franciscans’ physical and theoretical appropriation of the past, the adaptation of an ancient site by a ‘modern’ religious order, the use and functions of space, the interaction between friars, laity and artists, and the contribution of the Roman Franciscans to the development of Marian devotion, thus shedding new light on the social, political and religious history of late-medieval Italy and its impact beyond the peninsula, from England to Bohemia and the Holy Land.
With its official recognition by the Roman state, the Christian community suddenly enjoyed the sympathy of the highest authorities, wide public attention and a great afflux, and with imperial support architectural masterpieces were erected, the Lateran Basilica, St. Peter's and San Paolo fuori le mura, whose dimensions and magnificence bore every comparison with pagan sanctuaries. Focusing on these formative centuries of Christianity, from the reign of Constantine until the emergence of the Medieval world order in the Carolingian age, Hugo Brandenburg offers a broad panoramic view of Christian church architecture in Rome from its conception to the establishment of canonical church types. Throughout, the author treats the archaeological remains as speaking testimonies, articulating the intentions, motivations and self-perception of Rome's early Christian community. This lucid and detailed exposition of more than 50 early churches of Rome from the fourth to the seventh century, which draws together archaeological, documentary and literary sources, will appeal to the layman and the specialist alike.
