This thesis looks at a variation of Verma modules called semi-holonomic Verma modules ... it investigates when a Verma module homomorphism lifts to a semi-holonomic Verma module homomorphism, and deduces that there is a curved analogue of the corresponding invariant operator.
This book studies structural properties of Q-curvature from an extrinsic point of view by regarding it as a derived quantity of certain conformally covariant families of differential operators which are associated to hypersurfaces.
This book consists of about 20 lectures on theoretical and observational aspects of astrophysical black holes, by experts in the field. The basic principles and astrophysical applications of the black hole magnetosphere and the Blandford-Znajek process are reviewed in detail, as well as accretion by black holes, black hole X-Ray binaries, black holes with cosmic strings, and so on. Recent advances in X-Ray observations of galactic black holes and new understanding of supermassive black holes in AGNs and normal galaxies are also discussed.
We study conformal symmetry breaking differential operators which map dif-ferential forms on Rn to differential forms on a codimension one subspace Rn−1. These operators are equivariant with respect to the conformal Lie algebra of the subspace Rn−1. They correspond to homomorphisms of generalized Verma mod-ules for so(n, 1) into generalized Verma modules for so(n+1, 1) both being induced from fundamental form representations of a parabolic subalgebra. We apply the F -method to derive explicit formulas for such homomorphisms. In particular, we find explicit formulas for the generators of the intertwining operators of the re-lated branching problems restricting generalized Verma modules for so(n +1, 1) to so(n, 1). As consequences, we derive closed formulas for all conformal symmetry breaking differential operators in terms of the first-order operators d, δ, d¯ and δ¯ and certain hypergeometric polynomials. A dominant role in these studies is played by two infinite sequences of symmetry breaking differential operators which depend on a complex parameter λ. Their values at special values of λ appear as factors in two systems of factorization identities which involve the Branson-Gover opera- tors of the Euclidean metrics on Rn and Rn−1 and the operators d, δ, d¯ and δ¯ as factors, respectively. Moreover, they naturally recover the gauge companion and Q-curvature operators of the Euclidean metric on the subspace Rn−1, respectively.
This book is a comprehensive treatise on the theory and applications of moment functions in image analysis. Moment functions are widely used in various realms of computer vision and image processing. Numerous algorithms and techniques have been developed using image moments, in the areas of pattern recognition, object identification, three-dimensional object pose estimation, robot sensing, image coding and reconstruction. This book provides a compilation of the theoretical aspects related to different types of moment functions, and their applications in the above areas. The book is organized into two parts. The first part discusses the fundamental concepts behind important moments such as geometric moments, complex moments, Legendre moments, Zernike moments, and moment tensors. Most of the commonly used properties of moment functions and the mathematical framework for the derivation of basic theorems and results are discussed in detail. This includes the derivation of moment invariants, implementation aspects of moments, transform properties, and fast methods for computing the moment functions for both binary and gray-level images. The second part presents the key application areas of moments such as pattern recognition, object identification, image-based pose estimation, edge detection, clustering, segmentation, coding and reconstruction. Important algorithms in each of these areas are discussed. A comprehensive list of bibliographical references on image moments is also included.
This book presents the proceedings of a meeting intended to gather researchers working in the fields of harmonic analysis and global analysis to discuss some questions of common interest. About twenty talks covered the principal topics, illustrating the recent interactions between these two fields. The meeting started with a survey on spin geometry and was followed by talks on the spectrum of the Dirac operator in hyperbolic, Kahlerian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry. Different aspects of representation theory were discussed: Schubert cells, unitary representations with reflection symmetry, gradient operators, and Poisson transformations. Another series of talks was devoted to the systematic use of representation theory in global analysis; in particular on the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand sequences in parabolic geometry, the construction of conformally covariant operators, and some refinements of the Kato inequality in Riemannian geometry. Various presentations ranging from general relativity to harmonic maps, by way of $4$-dimensional geometry/topology, Seiberg-Witten theory and the index theorem in $2$-dimensional hyperbolic geometry illustrated the diversity of applications of techniques from harmonic analysis.
