Here is the story of 10 churches in America that are growing at a very rapid pace. They are different in many respects: sections of the country, age of congregation, age of pastor, and their approach to the task of growth. Author Towns has done a very fine job in elaborating these differences but the major contribution of the book may well be the strong emphasis on the ways in which they are alike. It is must reading for every pastor and church member who is depressed by declining attendance or lack of growth.
Baptist Churches of South Carolina and list of Baptists.
The book rings with the names of early inhabitants and prominent citizens. For the genealogist there is the important and wholly fortuitous list of tithables of Pittsylvania County for the year 1767, which enumerates the names of nearly 1,000 landowners and property holders, amounting in sum to a rough census of the county in its infancy. Additional lists include the names, some with inclusive dates of service, of sheriffs, justices of the peace, members of the House of Delegates, 1776-1928, members of the Senate of Virginia, 1776-1928, clerks of the court, and judges.
The first Baptist church in Maryland was founded in Chestnut Ridge in 1709. The Maryland Baptist Union Association was established in 1836. This fine little book is valuable for the abundance of names it contains: lists of church officers, Sunday school teachers, pastors, etc. It lists fifty-six church histories in chronological order of organization. Some histories are quite lengthy, while others are very brief. An appendix contains several biographical sketches of leaders in the Maryland Baptist Community. The text is illustrated with engravings of churches and church founders.
