Historians have only recently established the scale of the violence carried out by the supporters of General Franco during and after the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. An estimated 88,000 unidentified victims of Francoist violence remain to be exhumed from mass graves and given a dignified burial, and for decades, the history of these victims has also been buried. This volume brings together a range of Spanish and British specialists who offer an original and challenging overview of this violence. Contributors not only examine the mass killings and incarcerations, but also carefully consider how the repression carried out in the government zone during the Civil War - long misrepresented in Francoist accounts - seeped into everyday life. Globalisation, religion and development have sparked much interest and debates in the last two decades. The analysis of religion and especially Islam has been presented in a simplistic notion of linear development, and the supposed inability to adapt to modernity and capitalism. This journal will consider such views and assess their validity by focusing on: Part 1: introducing the theoretical issues and debates surrounding globalisation, religion and development, illustrating the often-contested nature of the concepts, and considering the implications for modernity and development. Part 2: continuing with the same theme but focusing on gender and development, representation of women, the effect of modernisation on the increasing consumption of alcohol in Kazakhstan, women's access to higher education in revolutionary Iran and finally women and domestic violence. Part 3: focusing on case studies to explore the implications of globalisation, regionalisation and development in Iran, Turkey, Sudan, Peru and Senegal.
In the second volume comparing Poland and Spain (the comparison being fruit of cooperation between the University of Warsaw and the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid) we concentrate on studying two historical periods of the 20th century, the happy 1920′s of the interwar period and later on at the end of World War II. The two periods have been studied in their corresponding countries but have never been compared in parallel to see their coincidences and differences. Poland and Spain of the time allow for a comparison due to the similar populations, social agricultural models with intensely industrialised local centres and modern structuring processes which lead to a crisis of the very national unity. The selected periods present indispensable similarities which make the study interesting.
