A practical guide to the majority of pumps and compressors used in engineering applications Pumps and compressors are ubiquitous in industry, used in manufacturing, processing and chemical plant, HVAC installations, aerospace propulsion systems, medical applications, and everywhere else where there is a need to pump liquids, or circulate or compress gasses. This well-illustrated handbook covers the basic function, performance, and applications for the most widely used pump and compressor types available on the market today. It explains how each device operates and includes the governing mathematics needed to calculate device performance such as flow rates and compression. Additionally, real-world issues such as cavitation, and priming are covered. Pumps & Compressors is divided into two sections, each of which offers a notation of variables and an introduction. The Pumps section covers piston pumps, radial turbopumps, axial turbopumps, rotating pumps, hydraulic pumps, and pumps with driving flow. The Compressors section covers piston compressors, rotating compressors, turbo compressors, ejectors, vacuum pumps, and compressors for cooling purposes. A virtual encyclopedia of all pumps and compressors that describes the mechanics of all devices and the theory, mathematics, and formulas governing their function Allows the reader to develop the skills needed to confidently select the appropriate pump or compressor type and specification for their applications Pumps & Compressors is an excellent text for courses on pumps and compressors, as well as a valuable reference for professional engineers and laymen seeking knowledge on the topic.
This last, the education of pump users, is precisely what this book was intended to do. To what extent we must have achieved our purpose, our readers must decide. My good friend and associate, J. T. (Terry) McGuire, and I have been working very closely together for a long time. Our view of engineering problems and of their solutions coincide to an astonishing degree. When I was asked to prepare a second edition of my book Centrifugal Pumps, it was logical that I turned to Terry and suggested that he be my coauthor on this project. He agreed to do so, and his cooperation has been most valuable, both in improving the resultant work and in easing my burden. It would be presumptuous on my part to pretend that nothing has changed in the technology of centrifugal pumps during the 30 years since I prepared the manuscript for the first edition of this book. Let me, then, speak of some of these changes.

This handbook places emphasis on the importance of correct interpretation of pumping requirements, both by the user and the supplier. Completely reworked to incorporate the very latest in pumping technology, this practical handbook will enable you to understand the principles of pumping, hydraulics and fluids and define the various criteria necessary for pump and ancillary selection. The Pump Users Handbook will prove an invaluable aid in ordering pump equipment and in the recognition of fundamental oprational problems.
This text explains just how and why the best-of-class pump users are consistently achieving superior run lengths, low maintenance expenditures and unexcelled safety and reliability. Written by practicing engineers whose working career was marked by involvement in pump specification, installation, reliability assessment, component upgrading, maintenance cost reduction, operation, troubleshooting and all conceivable facets of pumping technology, this text describes in detail how to accomplish best-of-class performance and low life cycle cost.
This handbook summarizes the research results on hydraulic problems in centrifugal pump design and describes the state of the art in a comprehensive way. For this 4th edition, current research results of practical relevance were included. The selection and presentation of the material was oriented towards the needs of pump manufacturers, system planners and pump operators. Much space is devoted to understanding the physical relationships as essential knowledge for correct application. The latter is supported by more than 160 diagrams and tables for calculation and problem diagnosis . The book has been extensively updated. New additions: - A separate chapter on "Vibrations on vertical pumps". - Measurements of hydraulic exciter and impeller reaction forces - Alternating stresses and fatigue fractures of impellers - a critical study on the accuracy of numerical flow calculations of pumps - Design of inlet housings and double spirals for multistage pumps.
Positive Displacement Pumps is a current reference guide for positive displacement pumps for both traditional and state-of-the-art testing methods, and serves as a bridge between textbooks and manufacturer's literature by providing equipment testing practices based on technical know-how, practical experience, and academic theory. With its simple, practical focus, this book not only is a resource guide to any engineer's task, but also adds important information to the overall literature of pump fundamentals and operating reliability: Written for field users, and terminology concisely defined. A mentoring guide highlighting areas for troubleshooting problem-solving when performance criteria are not met. Produced with industry consensus and gone through the same rigorous technical review process as other ETPC procedures.
