Excerpt from Heath's Complete Practical Arithmetic In preparing this book, the aim has been to make it complete, so that it might cover with sufficient fulness the topics usually required in common and grammar schools. The aim also has been to make the work practical, i.e. to use only such rules, definitions, solutions, and problems as would accustom the learner to reason, compute, and estimate with the same facility and economy of thought with which business men reason, compute, and estimate in practical life. Great care has been exercised to omit the merely theoretical and the unpractical, as well as problems that are too hard for the grades for which the book is intended. The relations of the inductive work, the definition, the solution, the rule, are such that the learner, with a minimum of help, should easily master the difficulties through the logical progression of the steps from the known to the unknown. While care has been exercised in selecting a great variety of practical business problems and in arranging them progressively, the development of mental power has been kept constantly in view. Excerpt from The Rand-McNally Practical Arithmetic: Complete for All Ordinary Purposes It is supposed that most of the pupils who use this book will be prepared for it by the use of the Primary of the same series. This will be much to their advantage. But it is believed that the book is so constructed that the pupil can use it profitably and intelligently, no matter where, or in what way, he may have received his earlier training. Competent and careful observers often assert that too much time, proportionally, is given to Arithmetic in schools, and that too little accuracy and proficiency is gained. There is truth in both statements. And it is hoped that the use of this book will correct these evils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Practical Arithmetic Pupils can be trained to logical habits of mind and stimulated to a good degree of intellectual energy by solving problems suited to their capacities. By this course they acquire practical mastery over the everyday problems of common life as well as gain the very best mental discipline. The shortest and best way of learn ing Arithmetic is by solving problems. The rules which this book contains are not intended to be committed to memory, but to help the pupil to neat and intelligent methods. The rules follow explanations of processes, and no rule should be considered until the process which it summarizes is thoroughly understood. Dependence upon set rules and formulas is the worst possible mental slavery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
