"How can you get twelve feet into eight feet, no matter how good you are in arithmetic?" asked Happie Scollard, a trifle impatiently. "You'd have to be pretty poor in arithmetic to try it. Even home-taught children ought to know something about putting greater into lesser," observed Bob. "Would you mind telling us what you're driving at, Keren-happuch, my dear?" Happie groaned. "This room is quite squeedged enough with us six Scollards in it, without crowding in my dreadful name, Robert, my dear," she retorted. "What I was driving at was a harmless little humorous joke. This kitchen is eight feet wide, and we have twelve feet, we six, haven't we? I was wishing we had more space to stand on; that's all."
This inspiring picture book retells the story of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunberg—the Swedish teenager who has led a global movement to raise awareness about the world’s climate crisis—using allegory to make this important topic accessible to young children. Greta is a little girl who lives in a beautiful forest threatened by Giants. When the Giants first came to the forest, they chopped down trees to make houses. Then they chopped down more trees and made even bigger homes. The houses grew into towns and the towns grew into cities, until now there is hardly any forest left. Greta knows she has to help the animals who live in the forest, but how? Luckily, Greta has an idea… A section at the back explains that, in reality, the fight against the “giants” isn’t over and explains how you can help Greta in her fight. The story of Mysterious Gretta touches on the real and the imaginary tale of a gentle and mysterious lady. Her story transcends beyond the reality of a town full of uncertainties of the future and ambitions of people whose drive to succeed leads to kidnapping and even possible murder. For Gretta, it all began in 1885 as a passenger on the Byssinia ship from England and her arrival in the US and into the Wild West; there she lived among the Indian tribes, where she faced the curse of an Indian healer. Her life's curse touched the lives of her loved ones, like her great-granddaughter Tracy, in the form of a possessed doll and her evil crystal eye.
Hunting wild boar is a keenly held tradition in the Mississippi Delta. Fraught with danger, it challenges the hunter, observer, wildlife enthusiast, and landowner alike. Panther Tract is an insider's observance of extraordinary hunting, southern hospitality, camaraderie, and the love of dogs, horses, and hair-raising excitement. The over 160 photographs are representative of a “day at the hunt,” starting at dawn and ending well after dark. The tales center on vivid hunting experiences, both at Panther Tract, a large wilderness paradise in Yazoo County, owned by legendary southern gentleman Howard Brent, and in other locations in the Mississippi Delta. The narratives come from men, women, doctors, lawyers, judges, businessmen, politicians, farmers, sharecroppers' sons, and even a Hollywood screenwriter. Melody Golding's photographs focus on the Delta landscape and on the people and animals involved in the hunt. Portraits of the hunters, and their interactions with one another and their dogs and horses, fascinate. An award-winning photographer and an expert horsewoman, Golding brings a knowledgeable and critical eye to these images. The stories she collects range from traditional often humorous hunting tales to more serious accounts of the history of hog hunting in America. Hank Burdine, a Mississippi native and hunter who has written for many statewide publications, lends a broad vision to the history, statistics, and lore of hunting wild hogs. An appendix features hunt recipes by Chef John Folse and philosophy on the stewardship of harvesting the hog. A colorful and diverse assemblage of beautiful photographs and tales, this book reveals a treasured regional tradition.
This sequel depicts six fatherless girls as they grow older, their brother Bob and frail little mother.
Pete was just a boy when his father, a town marshal, was shot down while he was on duty. His mother so heart broken, couldn't resign herself to the death, and she died of a broken heart only months later. An older rancher in the area took Pete in and treated him as a son. Teaching him the ranching business, and giving him the run of the ranch. After he had been on the ranch a few years, he was introduced to a man, a range detective that came to town in search of some outlaws. Pete always had in the back of his mind that he wanted to go after the men that had killed his dad, and this man showed him the way. The detective was better equipped to get on the track of the outlaws and follow them wherever it took him. Pete had pledged to himself that he would never be a town marshal that was stuck to a limited area he could search. After listening to the detective talk about his cases, Pete worked up enough courage to ask the man if he could come home with him and learn the trade. He promised that he would earn his way on the ranch while he was training. Much to his surprise, the man agreed and this started Pete's carrer, both as a rancher, and as a detective.
