About the Book Grandpa Speaks: A Time Lapse Diary was written by an elder, first-time Grandpa. In time lapse form, this diary relates facts, feelings, and often emotions in a way that one might hear from a close friend or relative over the phone, in a letter, or on a postcard. It may have multiple entries in a day, days in a row, or a week or two with nothing. Then, like with a best friend for life, the entries just pick up as though no span of time in the conversation has passed. It looks back, paints the present, and hints at the future through imagination. About the Author J.M. Loyd is just a guy from Arkansas who grew up in a small town in the central part of the state. A town with three colleges and a fine ditch. I split my young time between them. I was fortunate to attend school at the teacher’s college from nursery school through the fifth grade. It was quite an experience to be the guinea pig for the aspiring teachers standing in the hall behind the two-way mirrors. I swam on championship teams for high school and two of the colleges. Achieved first chair trumpet in the school band, was a member of three rock bands, lead singer in two. Stage actor, set designer and finder. I met my wife and put all of that away for our family. We worked together daily and raised our son. We married for keeps. We had stores in the footwear and fashion industry and helped her family run the summer camp for children at our homeplace. I was named “Captain”. The name stuck. I led adventures groups, was the camp deejay, announcer, song leader and counsellor. I am a licensed pilot, HAM, scuba diver, sailor, boater, builder, biker, herpetologist, gardener, fisherman, weatherman, salesman, locksmith, musician and lifeguard, mostly retired. But, most importantly, a late in life Grandpa, with a lot to share.
This acclaimed picture book from two award-winning creators about connecting across generational and language differences shows that sometimes you don't need words to find common ground. But as they sit down to draw together, something magical happens -- with a shared love of art and storytelling, the two form a bond that goes beyond words. With spare text by Minh Lê and luminous illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat, this stirring story about reaching across barriers will be cherished for years to come. "A beautifully told and illustrated story about a grandson and grandfather struggling to communicate across divides of language, age and culture." --- Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize winner Don't miss LIFT, also by Minh Lê and Dan Santat!
Though separated by language, age, and an ocean, a child and grandparent find common ground in this warm, witty picture book Grandpa lives on the other side of the ocean. He takes naps all the time. He eats different foods. He speaks an unfamiliar language. His house is the most boring place on Earth! Or is it? A little time together just might reveal that Grandpa is also a great singer, an energetic sandcastle builder, and a troublemaker . . . just like his grandson! With her signature warmth and humor, award-winning author-illustrator Hyewon Yum shares the challenges and joys of having a relative who lives far away—proving that even from across the ocean, the grandparent-grandchild relationship is a very special one.
Find a cozy place, open these pages, and laugh and cry together. Talk to Me, Grandpa! Talk to Me! encourages conversation about a frequently shrouded rite of passage, the death of a loved one. Intended for adults and children to read aloud together, this is not a book of answers but a poignant way for them to explore perceptions and emotions.
"Just When U Think U Know What You're Talking About . . . Along Comes Grandpa" is one of the first books to address caregiver needs and issues in one concise story. It is the story of a relationship between two very different generations, separated by almost sixty years, which at times is funny, heartfelt, sad, and moving. At all times, it is honest-sometimes painfully honest. It is about how difficult it is to be the caregiver, the family member, the cheerleader, the doctor, the nurse, and the care coordinator. We are all those things and more when we assume the role of caregiver for a loved one. Unfortunately, the relationship changes and we no longer get to be the granddaughter, wife, mother, father, or husband when we assume the caregiver role. Sue Salach's endearing story makes the reader feel that it is OK to laugh, be angry, or feel guilty, to be frustrated, tired, sad, hopeless, and to feel all of these things at the same time, or go through the stages a little at a time. However, the most important message from this story is that we all get through it and we need to forgive ourselves for the mistakes we made along the journey.
A teen girl embarks on a quest to cure her grandfather's sudden illness with the legendary Elixiron, only to confront the ancient guardian of Lake Dragontide and uncover that the true cost of the cure may sever her deepest family bonds. Ellie Harper will face any challenge to save her grandfather—even if it means venturing into a forbidden forest. When Ellie learns that a rare ingredient called Dragonscale Moss is needed to create an elixir to cure her ailing grandfather, she embarks on a quest into the deadly Thornveil Wilds to retrieve it. Along the way, she encounters treacherous creatures, navigates perilous landscapes, and uncovers secrets about her family history. However, Ellie soon discovers that the forest holds more dangers than she could have ever imagined and that the price of saving her grandfather’s life may be higher than she is willing to pay. Ellie finds an unlikely ally in Pipwhistle, a mischievous Quibnocket who agrees to guide her through the dangerous wilds. Together, they face down monstrous wolves, outwit greedy bog dwellers, and even come face to face with Aurathorn, the fearsome dragon who guards the Dragonscale Moss. But as Ellie soon learns, even in a realm of ancient magic, the greatest battles are often fought within.

As the families and community attempt to deal with the loss of Landon, Michelle seeks solace with a group of her friends. While sharing memories, the teenagers search for answers as to why their seemingly perfect world has suddenly been turned upside down.
