One hundred and sixteen years have passed since Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) formed basketball teams known as the Wesleyans, the Methodists, the Preachers, and now, the Coyotes. Fathers, sons, and grandsons have worn the purple and gold colors, winning and losing but always striving to represent the university in a most positive manner. Head coaches had been students, middle school, high school, and college teachers. Like the players themselves, the coaches had come from different states, scattered in all directions. But they were here in Salina back in 1901 and continuing on in 2017 as teammates and brothers of the basketball, bound together by the mutual story that is Kansas Wesleyan basketball.
Melvina Brown has become an expert at holding it together. On a horse farm in California, she’s raising two boys—smart, tough Archie and sweet Theo, who dreams of playing baseball, and doesn’t let the fact that he has only one arm stop him. A perfect PTA mom Melvina is not—her boots are too dirty for that. She’s just taking it one day at a time, with a little help from her boyfriend, her twin sister and her dad. And while her heart is still heavy sometimes with the loss of her beloved brother Henry, who long ago went mysteriously missing, Mel keeps his spirit nearby, making him a larger-than-life hero in his nephews’ imaginations, creating tales of his epic adventures for their bedtime stories. It’s a life that works pretty well—until her estranged husband shows up at their door, wanting to make up for lost time with his sons. A family that plays ball in a graveyard and stays up late to watch rare flowers bloom will never be ordinary. But together, the tempestuous, mismatched Browns stumble through anger and confusion to laughter and understanding, discovering that sometimes love really is the only answer. From National Book Award finalist Brandon Hobson, a kaleidoscopic middle-grade adventure that mixes the anxieties, friendships, and wonders of a Cherokee boy's life with Cherokee history and lore. Ziggy has ANXIETY. Partly this is because of the way his mind works, and how overwhelmed he can get when other people (especially his classmate Alice) are in the room. And partly it's because his mother disappeared when he was very young, making her one of many Native women who've gone mysteriously missing. Ziggy and his sister, Moon, want answers, but nobody around can give them. Once Ziggy gets it in his head that clues to his mother's disappearance may be found in a nearby cave, there's no stopping him from going there. Along with Moon, Alice, and his best friend, Corso, he sets out on a mind-bending adventure where he’ll discover his story is tied to all the stories of the Cherokees that have come before him. Ziggy might not have any control over the past -- but if he learns the lessons of the storytellers, he might be able to better shape his future and find the friends he needs.
