Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) was one of the most famous architects and designers of the twentieth century. Nearly everyone knows his red-blue chair and the Rietveld Schröder House, but not many people are aware of the full extent of his work. Renowned authors from the Netherlands and abroad describe Rietveld's world, the technology of his time and the interaction between his work and that of contemporaries such as Piet Mondriaan, Theo Van Doesburg, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. "Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) is perhaps Holland's best-known architect. His Schröder House in Utrecht from 1924 has achieved iconic status. In fact, Rietveld built around 100 houses, and of these very little is known. Photographer Arjan Bronkhorst (b. 1972), who established his credentials in 2013 with the bestseller Grachtenhuizen/Amsterdam Canal Houses, went in search of these unknown Rietveld houses. He photographed their interiors and residents, travelling as far as the United States. Light and space are what characterise Rietveld's houses. Sobriety is a basic principle in his designs. Only appreciated by a small group of intellectual clients who commissioned Rietveld to design an avant-garde house. Authors Willemijn Zwikstra and Marc van den Eerenbeemt explored the archives and interviewed current residents about living in a Rietveld house. "The legacy of the Modern Movement has gained legendary status, largely as a result of the appreciation of the masterworks and the visionary architectural concepts. In the reality of everyday life, however, it has been difficult to maintain the architectural creations of the Modern Movement in such a way that they still reflect the original intentions of their designers. Many buildings and ensembles of the Modern Movement have already been saved; the icons amongst these have even become so precious that they are treated like pieces of art rather than as buildings in everyday use. But despite the successes that have been achieved, many buildings and ensembles are still at risk of demolition or maltreatment. The bi-annul international conference is one means by which it is possible to continue furthering the aims of Docomomo. Knowing that many modern architects aimed at functionality and changeability, the challenge for today is how to deal with the modern heritage in relation to its continuously changing context, including physical, economic and functional changes, as well as socio-cultural, political and scientific ones. Last Year at Betty and Bob's: A Novelty is the first in a series of novellas emerging from a writing practice that taps the cusp of consciousness between dreaming and waking. A storyline, or genealogy, tinted a shade of RGB blue, is fashioned by thinking through the felt unthought of this between space. A fabulation, an anarchive of what passes through. Lucid dreaming of this type is rife with allusions to conceptual and material goings-on, manifesting in awkward imaginaries. The dream personas are rendered as complex character amalgams with nomadic ages, sexes, genders and phenotypes. Occurrences of lived "fact" elide with a hallucinatory real as speculation. In A Novelty, Bette B, an ageing quasi-academic artist researcher, and BØB, attuned urban rodent, are palindromic variants of a generic cast of Betty's and Bob's. The happenstance of their meeting on the super slick POMOC (PostOffice MotionCorridor) affects a trans-special contagion. These are the facts of the matter. Praised for their innovative but clear presentation, they have designed everything from artist's books for Gabriel Orozco and Rineke Dijkstra to an official government stamp commemorating the marriage of Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, based on the number two, since the wedding date was 02-02-02. This book represents a range of work from the past 15 years, mostly books but also posters and smaller pieces. However, the artists have chosen not simply to present the work again but to make it new through collage and reinterpretative interplay, thus "recycling" their innovative design.
