The America of the early republic was built on an experiment, a hopeful prophecy that would only be fulfilled if an enlightened people could find its way through its past and into a future. Americans recognized that its promises would only be fully redeemed at a future date. In Revolutionary Prophecies, renowned historians Robert M. S. McDonald and Peter S. Onuf summon a diverse cast of characters from the founding generation—all of whom, in different ways, reveal how their understanding of the past and present shaped hopes, ambitions, and anxieties for or about the future. The essays in this wide-ranging volume explore the historical consciousness of Americans caught up in the Revolution and its aftermath. By focusing on how various individuals and groups envisioned their future, the contributors show that revolutionary Americans knew they were making choices that would redirect the "course of human events." Looking at prominent leaders such as Washington, Adams, Franklin, Hamilton, Madison, and Monroe, as well as more common people, from backcountry rebels and American Indians to printer Isaiah Thomas, the authors illuminate the range and complexity of the ways in which men and women of the founding generation imagined their future—and made our history.
Twenty years ago, a young David Lion was training to go to the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. He was skiing as a peace ambassador in an effort to warn the people of the earth about the dangers of the proliferation of nuclear weapons and their potential to spark World War III. During a training run on the grounds of George Washington's property, he became witness to a vision of the George Washington prophecy. This vision led him to write a paper that outlaid years before its time the Start Treaty and the Star WArs Missile Defense System. When the paper is rediscovered in July of 2001, David has a vision of an imminent attack upon the United States; which is of the Twin Towers exploding. He interprets this as the third and final woe of the George Washington prophecy, as recorded in the Library of Congress. Based on a true story, the now middle-aged David Lion claims that he is to advise the President of the United States and Secretaries of State and Defense in order to warn them of this disaster. Instead, he is sent to a psychiatric ward for a week. When he gets out, he is in a dragged out state until August 11, 2001 when he visits the Old North Church in Boston and sees the bust of General Washington. There he realizes that he is right and proceeds to write letters to the men in power of the United States government. Inspired by the brave men and women who, with their belief in God and country, stopped the effects of 9/11 from being more devastating. David continues to present Leonardo da Vinci type drawings of a modern space-based missile defense system to the elected leaders of the United States. As a purveyor of the George Washington prophecy, he teaches it to his sons who continue it on to the next generation with the mission of peace through American technical superiority.
