This book presents local knowledge about issues on life, science and technology. It presents the related science and technology knowledge, new applications or developments that have taken place based on local knowledge. It consists of papers that illustrate the contribution of local knowledge to scientific investigation, unearth unknown or little known significance of local plant and animal resources, as well as their management and conservation. The argument for the importance of modern techniques to increase the supply of natural resources through scientific manipulations is clear. However, traditional methods that ensure better quality and resilience is recommended. Integration of the traditional with the modern is explored, using disaster management strategies and integrative health care system as examples. Another aspect explored in this book is the changing food culture among the three main ethnics groups in Malaysia due to their interactions within a multicultural society. Archaeology has an often contentious relationship with the consequences of economic development. Tourism, urban development and natural resource exploitation have generated adverse impact on the archaeological record, indigenous cultures and local communities worldwide. Over the decades, international conventions, national laws and corporate ventures have sought to address the problems, but too often they have fallen short and immense challenges remain. Looking ahead, the contributions to this volume constitute a global conversation on the most salient issue facing archaeology as it interacts with economic development: Is collision with development still the best course? Or, is a more effective strategy to pursue collaborative relationships with the forces of economic and social change?
This book discusses the archaeological research and the development carried out at the site of Bukit Tengkorak in Semporna, Sabah from 1994 to 2017. Archaeological findings from Bukit Tengkorak have shown that the site is an important Neolithic site in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, dated around 3,000 years ago. Archaeological surveys and excavations at Bukit Tengkorak had revealed that the site is very rich in archaeological evidence and deposits such as pottery, stone tools, and food remains. Scientific studies conducted at Bukit Tengkorak had concluded that it is one of the largest pottery-making sites in Southeast Asia. Significant discoveries from Bukit Tengkorak include archaeological evidence on prehistoric human migration and one of the longest maritime trade or exchange routes in the world during the Neolithic Period. In addition, this book discusses the local and traditional Bajau pottery-making of Semporna which is believed to be connected to the prehistoric pottery of Bukit Tengkorak, as well as brief information on other archaeological sites and archaeology of Semporna and Sabah. Finally, this book presents the history and various stages of development of Bukit Tengkorak as an archaeological heritage site for archaeological tourism in Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia. The Malay version of this book, Arkeologi Bukit Tengkorak, Sabah won the National Book Award in 2016 ("Buku Arkeologi Terbaik" category).
This collection offers a sample of contemporary works on tourism and its impact on the Malaysian environment, written by academics from a variety of perspectives. Asia's 48 countries have an estimated 1.757 billion urban population and 2.4 billion people in rural areas (or approximately 60 per cent of the global population). Divided into central, eastern, southern, south-eastern and western regions, the continent is also extremely heterogeneous in terms of water quality conditions. The policies and management practices vary significantly from one country to another, and even within one country, depending on specific economic, political, social, environmental, legal and institutional factors. In order to appreciate the complexities associated with water quality policy and management, it is important to acknowledge the multiplicity of interrelated and often conflicting events, issues, actors and interests, both within and outside the water sector that impact them. This complexity, alongside institutional inability for systematic and coordinated collaboration, are potent reasons as to why, in the second decade of the 21st century, formulation and implementation of efficient water quality management policies benefitting humankind and the environment have still not been achieved.
