Perhaps it's the same light that inspired Vermeer and van Gogh, or maybe it's government support for the arts or the excellent photo museums and galleries; something must explain the explosion of Dutch photography over the past 20 years. Besides the rise of Rineke Dijkstra to art stardom, other vital Dutch photographers working in a range of styles have been making strong marks on the medium. This catalogue from an exhibition sponsored by the LaSalle Bank that appeared at The Art Institute of Chicago features established and emerging photographers, including Rinkeke Dijkstra, Bertien van Manen, Hans van der Meer, Wijnanda Deroo, Celine van Balen, Koos Breukel, Juul Hondius, Hellen van Meene, Elspeth Diederix and Marnix Goossens.

The Stedelijk Museum's photography collection is the oldest of its kind in a European museum for modern art. This catalogue presents a selection of 100 photographs from approximately 4,000 in the Museum's holdings. Drawing on famous masterpieces and lesser known images, this selection gives an impression of the quality of the collection and of the versatility of photography's potential for expression over the past century, from Eugene Atget to Andreas Gurski and from Lewis Hine to Nan Goldin.
This volume is the first comprehensive monograph on Rineke Dijkstra to be published in the United States, accompanying the first U.S. mid-career survey of this important Dutch artists work in photography and video. Also featured are series that the artist has been working on continuously for years, such as Almerisa (1994), which documents a young immigrant girl as she grows up and adapts to her new environment. Exhibition curators Jennifer Blessing, Senior Curator, Photography, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Sandra S. Phillips, Senior Curator of Photography, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, contribute essays accompanied by an interview with the artist by Jan van Adrichem, selected interviews with several of the artists subjects, and entries on the artists series by Chelsea Spengemann, as well as the most comprehensive exhibition history and bibliography to date.
