The purpose of the United Nations Challenge Badges is to raise awareness, educate and motivate young people to change their behaviour and be active agents of change in their local communities. Additional badges are available or are being developed on a number of other topics including: Agriculture, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Energy, Governance, Hunger, Nutrition, the Ocean, Soils and Water. The Forests Challenge Badge is designed to help educate children and young people about the crucial role that forests play for life on our planet. This booklet includes basic educational contents on the different types of forests and where they grow. It explains how forests provide essential ecosystem services such as clean air, water, and climate change mitigation. It also describes various forest resources and explains how millions of people worldwide rely on forests for their livelihoods. The badge describes the threats to our planet’s forests and what is being done to protect them. This material is appropriate for use in school classes, Guide or Scout groups or youth meetings generally. It includes a wide range of activities and ideas to stimulate learning about the importance of forests, while motivating children and young people to help protect forests and become aware of the impacts of their actions on the environment.
Bioenergy is an important source of renewable energy that can help fight climate change and provide access to clean energy. Currently, bioenergy accounts for 12 percent of total energy consumption and 50 percent of total energy consumption from renewables. This booklet is a supplement to the YUNGA Energy Challenge Badge. It aims to teach youth about the importance of bioenergy, its main sources, impacts and production processes, exploring connections between bioenergy, sustainability and development. The booklet also contains practical activities to be implemented in learning contexts.

The badge looks at how our daily lives impact the Earth’s climate and provides ideas on how individuals can take action to help make this close relationship more sustainable.
This teacher’s guide aims to introduce students aged 10–13 to forests, their current state and multiple values, while allowing teachers to meet curricular objectives. The teaching modules focus on defining forests, investigating their role in the water cycle, exploring some of their products and introducing students to sustainable forest management. The teaching draws inspiration from internationally recognized pedagogical approaches such as the inquiry method. Most of the learning takes place by “doing”, in classrooms or under the trees, rather than being paper-based, although reading and writing exercises are also included. The teacher’s guide is complemented by a separate learning guide for school students. The State of the World publications cover important global themes that are core to FAO’s mission – eradicating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; eliminating poverty and driving forward economic and social progress for all; and ensuring sustainable natural resources management.

The project was designed to address the following interlinked barriers preventing sustainable land and forest management outcomes and building resilience to climate change in Kyrgyz mountain ecosystems: inadequate legal framework for sustainable forest and land management, inadequate land tenure reforms, outdated approaches to sustainable forest and land management, and limited capacity of local institutions. The project’s overall objective is to enhance the enabling environment in the forestry and agricultural sectors and sustain the flow of ecosystem services, including enhancement of carbon stocks in forests and agro-ecosystems through the sustainable management and enhanced productivity of mountainous silvo-agro-pastoral ecosystems, and to improve productivity and mountain livelihoods in the Kyrgyz Republic. Overall, the evaluation rated the project as “moderately satisfactory”, with several examples of positive new approaches introduced by the project into forestry, agriculture and pasture management. The evaluation included specific recommendations not only to FAO, but also to the national forestry service. One of the innovative recommendations is to revisit the project sites in five to ten years to check certain success factors, such as the tree survival rates.
The Disaster Risk Reduction challenge badge is designed to help educate children and young people about hazards, disasters, and how the crucial role disaster risk reduction plays for life on our planet. This material is appropriate for use in school classes, Guide or Scout groups and other youth related groups. It includes a wide range of activities and ideas to stimulate learning about disaster risk reduction and promote action in local communities. This booklet includes basic background information on disaster risk reduction. It explains what hazards are and what makes some hazards turn into disasters. It explains the factors that put people at risk, and which groups are more vulnerable. It then provides information on preventing, reducing, and preparing for specific hazards. It explains what is involved in recovery work, and finally, provides concrete actions for making a difference on an individual level. The badge has the following learning and behaviour change objectives: -Learn about the different types of natural hazards and disasters as well as those that have occurred in the past around the world; -Know what disaster risk reduction is and what measures can be taken to reduce disaster risks; -What type of recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction work is being undertaken after a disaster has happened; -Take action on helping yourself, your family and community to be better prepared before, during and after a disaster has occurred.
