Fishing Measures investigates the introduction and development of fisheries science to Newfoundlands saltfishery between the 1880s and 1930s. It demonstrates a shift in fishing expertise and authority in the organization of the saltfishery, from embodied fishers knowledge governed by colonial authority to modern scientific state management. It situates this shift in the history of capitalism, by showing how the development of abstract scientific knowledge is an integral component of the development of capitalist value relations. Through theoretically-sensitive archival research, Fishing Measures trawls a variety of sources to document the introduction of scientific knowledge to all phases of saltfish production: from extraction to processing to consumption. The empirical sections of the book document scientific developments in artificial propagation, the knowledge of life-history and movements of cod, curing techniques, and cod liver oil production. The introduction and conclusion contextualize this narrative in a subterranean school of political economy known as form analysis. Fishing Measures contributes to contemporary debates regarding the relationship between capitalism, the environment, and science.--

Creating a University is a collection of memoirs by more than 30 former faculty and staff of Memorial University -- a series of "MUNographies,"-- about personal and professional experiences working at Newfoundland's only university. It is something of a Memorial University family reunion, without a drunken uncle. In the years covered by this volume, primarily 1950 to 1990, few Memorial faculty were Canadians, let alone Newfoundlanders. These "come from aways" arrived in the middle of a post-colonial cultural renaissance, which saw a movement toward new interdisciplinary studies, and laid the groundwork for many of the programs and courses that are offered at the University today.

Focusing on the experiences of Thailand and Australia, this book examines the impact of trade-restrictive measures as related to the EU’s regulations to prevent Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. It is widely accepted that IUU fishing is harmful, and should be stopped, but there are different approaches to tackling it. Acknowledging this, this book argues that major efforts to fight IUU fishing require careful analyses if the goal is to achieve optimal results and avoid unintended consequences. The book draws on the recent experiences of Thailand and Australia to offer an empirical examination of one increasingly prominent solution, trade-restrictive measures. With Thailand representing direct, active intervention by the EU and Australia a more indirect dispersion of policy narratives and discourses, the book provides a rounded view on how likely it is that different countries in different situations will adapt to the changing policy norms regarding IUU fishing. Understanding the reactions of countries who might be targeted, or otherwise be influenced by the policy, generates new knowledge that helps inform a more effective and scalable implementation of the policy on the part of the EU and a better governance preparedness on the part of non-EU fishing nations. In broader terms, this book exposes a key moment of change in the compatibility between environmental regulations and international trade. The EU IUU policy is a prime example of a policy that uses the mechanisms of international trade to account for environmental and conservation objectives. By way of the unilateral and trade-restrictive stance against IUU fishing, the EU has positioned itself as a major market and normative power, driving its sustainability norms outwards. This book sheds light on the efficacy of this policy setup based on the analysis of country perspectives, which is a key factor influencing its potential spread. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of international fisheries politics, marine conservation, environmental policy and international trade, and will also be of interest to policymakers working in these areas. These guidelines have been produced to support implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries with regard to safety at sea in the fisheries sector. Their purpose is to enable relevant authorities to develop and implement strategies aimed at improved safety, health and conditions of service at sea in capture fisheries and aquaculture operations. They apply to all commercial fishing activities, as well as activities at sea within the aquaculture sector. Furthermore, the principles therein, may also be applied to vessels engaged in fisheries research. However, while these guidelines are not directed at sport and recreational activities carried out within the aquatic environment, administrations responsible for such sectors may well take note of the safety and health issues therein. The guidelines contribute to Strategic Objective 5: Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises.
