Dieser Band umreisst das innovative Feld einer komparatistischen, literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Globalisierungsforschung. Welchen Beitrag konnen Literatur, Kunst und Medien fur die Herausbildung eines globalen Imaginaren leisten? Was sind das fur Bilder, Narrative, Tropen und Figuren, die eine Vorstellung von der Einheit der Welt vermitteln? Gemeinsamer Ausgangspunkt der Beitrage ist die Annahme, dass Literatur und Kunste nicht bloss eine gegebene Welt abbilden, sondern an der diskursiven Herstellung von Welt(en) beteiligt sind. Ziel des Bandes ist, die Bestandteile des globalen Imaginaren sowie die verschiedenen Modi der literarischen Weltdarstellung und Weltherstellung in ihrer historischen Bandbreite zu untersuchen. Spezifisch literarische Formen des Weltbezugs werden dabei mit der Konstruktion globaler Zusammenhange in anderen kunstlerischen Medien in Zusammenhang gebracht. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt den Wechselwirkungen zwischen literarisch-kunstlerischen Weltkonstruktionen und den sozialen, okonomischen und politischen Globalisierungsprozessen. Nicht zuletzt werden deren Konsequenzen fur die literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Begriffsbildung - etwa: aktuelle Revisionen des Konzepts der Weltliteratur - reflektiert.
The volume features the work of leading scholars from the US, UK, Germany, China, Spain, and Russia and presents an important contribution to current debates on world literature. The contributions discuss various facets of the historically changing role and status of language in the construction of notions of universality and locality, of difference, foreignness, and openness; they explore the relationship between world literature and bilingualism, supranational languages, dialects, and linguistic inbetweenness. They also examine the larger social and political stakes behind both foundational and more recent attempts to articulate ideas of world literature. How can we talk about World Literature if we do not actually examine the world as a whole? This two-volume handbook provides readers with a comprehensive interpretation of globality through the multifaceted prism of the humanities and social sciences. The debate over the concept of world literature, which has been taking place with renewed intensity over the last twenty years, is tightly bound up with the issues of global interconnectedness in a polycentric world. Most recently, critiques of globalization-related conceptualizations, in particular, have made themselves heard: to what extent is the concept of world literature too closely connected with the political and economic dynamics of globalization? Such questions cannot be answered simply through theoretical debate. The material side of the production of world literature must therefore be more strongly integrated into the conversation than it has been. Using the example of Latin American literatures, this volume demonstrates the concrete construction processes of world literature. To that purpose, archival materials have been analyzed here: notes, travel reports, and correspondence between publishers and authors. The Latin American examples provide particularly rich information about the processes of institutionalization in the Western world, as well as new perspectives for a contemporary mapping of world literature beyond the established dynamics of canonization.

Focused on the relation between processes of globalization and literary genres, this volume intervenes in the prevalent notions of globalization, literary history, genre, and the novel. Using both close reading and world history, both literary criticism and political theory, the book is a timely intervention in the debates about world, postcolonial, and transnational literature as they have been intensified by critical globalization studies, world-systems analysis, Bourdieuan sociology, and cosmopolitanism studies. It contends that globalization, far from starting in recent decades, has a long and complex history, not unlike the history of literature itself, meaning that when we speak of globalization and literature, we in effect invoke the entire history of literature.
