This book is based on the history of Punjab and research conducted on the various aspects of the largest protest in human history by United Indian Peasants between the years 2020 and 2021 that came after a nationwide demonstration, when an estimated 250 million workers, families and their unions joined in a manner that can be considered as the largest organized strike in the history anywhere in the world by raising their voice against the Three Farm Laws. The strategies that the farmers' movement follows are the principles of non-violence and non-cooperation. They demonstrated the ability to organize and interact with a few domains and characters. The union participates in humanitarian activities that highlight and celebrate not only the practice of Sikh servers or services but also demonstrate the skills of leaders to uphold the principles of peace and tolerance even in times of stress and violence. The Kisan Andolan or the Indian farmers’ protest of 2020–2021 is one of the longest and biggest (and victorious) social movements in the history of independent India. The contributors to this volume discuss the disparity between agricultural history and rural history despite the two becoming synonymous in academic discussion. The editors state that exciting developments continue, but it is clear that the simple accumulation of empirical detail will not on its own, provide explanation and that exploration of the contents within these articles will inform positive change.
The ideal of the family farm has been used to justify a myriad of federal farm legislation. Land grants, the distribution of irrigation water, land-grant college research and services, farm programs, and tax laws all have been affected. Yet, asserts the author, federal legislation and practices have had an institutional bias toward large-scale farms and agribusiness and have hastened the demise of family farms. Dr. Vogeler examines the struggle between land interests in the private and public sectors and finds that the myth of the family farm has been used to obscure the dominance of agribusiness and that the corporate penetration of agriculture has in turn contributed to the plight of migrant workers, the decline of small towns, and the economic difficulties of independent farmers. Dr. Vogeler also identifies the major shortcomings of agribusiness and federal land-related laws and programs; examines the regional impact of agribusiness and federal farm programs on rural areas; and considers the role of racial minorities and women in the development of agrarian capitalism. In conclusion, he offers a structural analysis that provides the means for progressive social change and states that the achievement of economic equality in rural America and the dismantling of the corporate control of agriculture can be realized through farmer-labor alliances.
