Twenty-four contributions, intended for a wide audience from various disciplines, cover a variety of applications of heavy-tailed modeling involving telecommunications, the Web, insurance, and finance. Along with discussion of specific applications are several papers devoted to time series analysis, regression, classical signal/noise detection problems, and the general structure of stable processes, viewed from a modeling standpoint. The 5th Symposium on Stochastic Algorithms, Foundations and Applications (SAGA 2009) took place during October 26–28, 2009, at Hokkaido University, Sapporo(Japan).ThesymposiumwasorganizedbytheDivisionofComputerS- ence,GraduateSchoolofComputerScienceandTechnology,HokkaidoUniversity. It o?ered the opportunity to present original research on the design and analysis of randomized algorithms, random combinatorialstructures, implem- tation, experimental evaluation and real-world application of stochastic al- rithms/heuristics. In particular, the focus of the SAGA symposia series is on investigating the power of randomization in algorithms, and on the theory of stochastic processes especially within realistic scenarios and applications. Thus, the scope ofthe symposiumrangesfromthe study oftheoreticalfundamentals of randomizedcomputationtoexperimentalinvestigationsonalgorithms/heuristics and related stochastic processes. The SAGA symposium series is a biennial meeting. Previous SAGA s- posiatookplaceinBerlin,Germany(2001,LNCSvol.2264),Hat?eld,UK(2003, LNCS vol. 2827), Moscow, Russia (2005, LNCS vol. 3777), and Zur ¨ ich, Switz- land (2007, LNCS vol. 4665). This year 22 submissions were received, and the Program Committee selected 15 submissions for presentation. All papers were evaluated by at least three members of the ProgramCommittee, partly with the assistance of subreferees. The present volume contains the texts of the 15 papers presented at SAGA 2009, divided into groups of papers on learning, graphs, testing, optimization, and caching as well as on stochastic algorithms in bioinformatics.

The repression in Iran during the past thirty-three years has spilled into nearly every aspect of common citizens' lives. Human rights, integrity, ethics, cultural values, and legal morality in Iran have all been dismantled piece by piece since the revolution. This book offers a rigorous analysis of the achievements in the field of traffic control in large networks, oriented on two main aspects: the self-similarity in traffic behaviour and the scale-free characteristic of a complex network. Additionally, the authors propose a new insight in understanding the inner nature of things, and the cause-and-effect based on the identification of relationships and behaviours within a model, which is based on the study of the influence of the topological characteristics of a network upon the traffic behaviour. The effects of this influence are then discussed in order to find new solutions for traffic monitoring and diagnosis and also for traffic anomalies prediction. Although these concepts are illustrated using highly accurate, highly aggregated packet traces collected on backbone Internet links, the results of the analysis can be applied for any complex network whose traffic processes exhibit asymptotic self-similarity, perceived as an adaptability of traffic in networks. However, the problem with self-similar models is that they are computationally complex. Their fitting procedure is very time-consuming, while their parameters cannot be estimated based on the on-line measurements. In this aim, the main objective of this book is to discuss the problem of traffic prediction in the presence of self-similarity and particularly to offer a possibility to forecast future traffic variations and to predict network performance as precisely as possible, based on the measured traffic history.

The book addresses a weakness of current methodologies used in extreme value assessment, i.e. the assumption of stationarity, which is not given in reality. With respect to this issue a lot of new developed technologies are presented, i.e. influence of trends vs. internal correlations, quantitative uncertainty assessments, etc. The book not only focuses on artificial time series data, but has a close link to empirical measurements, in order to make the suggested methodologies applicable for practitioners in water management and meteorology.
