Explorations: Studies in Culture and Communication, principally edited by Edmund Carpenter and Marshall McLuhan, was the first postwar journal to engage directly with the new "grammars" of mid-century new media of communication. Launched in Toronto in 1953, at the very moment that television made its national debut in Canada, Explorations presented a mosaic of approaches to contemporary media culture and became the site in which McLuhan and Carpenter first formulated their most striking insights about new media in the electric age. The extraordinary breadth of contributions to Explorations from leading thinkers across the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences makes this journal a founding publication in the now burgeoning field of media studies. Originally funded by a Ford Foundation grant, the eight coedited issues of Explorations ran from 1953 to 1957 and are reprinted here for the first time in sixty years. The textbook has four chapters. Each chapter covers a grammatical point/component/element. Chapter 1 is a review of the BE verb. The BE is special and has it's own rules (different from other verbs). Chapter 2 is the Present Progressive tense. This is the tense we use when we are talking about things happening now or near now. Chapter 3 is the Simple Present Tense. We use the Simple Present Tense to talk about facts, routines, and habitual activities. Chapter 4 is a comparison of chapter 3 and 4.Each chapter has the same "layout" (arrangement, presentation, design, organization). First there is a section to "activate", or prepare your mind for learning. It includes a discussion with your classmates. Next you read a story about some ESOL students whose lives may be similar to yours. Then we break verb learning into many smaller sections for ease of learning, such as;affirmativenegativeyes/no questionsinformation questions(other important things to know)

When origami met the worlds of design and engineering, both fields embraced the ancient art form, using its principles and practices to discover new problems and to generate inventive solutions. This book demonstrates the potential of folding to improve the way things work, simplify how products are produced, and make possible new objects otherwise impossible. The solar collector, the felt stool, and the surgery tool have all been influenced in some way by folding paper. The example section is organized to show the folded figure next to the product prototype that was inspired by that work of origami. We have included models made from an array of materials over a range of sizes. This includes everything from a microscopic mechanism to huge solar panels designed to unfold in outer space. Most entries are at the prototype phase—meaning that physical hardware has been built to demonstrate the concept, but that the examples are not necessarily available commercially. In a globalized neo-colonial world an insidious and often debilitating crisis of knowledge not only continues to undermine the quality of research produced by scholars but to also perpetuate a neo-colonial and oppressive socio-cultural, political economic, and educational system. The lack of attention such issues receive in pedagogical institutions around the world undermines the value of education and its role as a force of social justice. In this context these knowledge issues become a central concern of critical pedagogy. As a mode of education that is dedicated to a rigorous form of knowledge work, teachers and students as knowledge producers, anti-oppressive educational and social practices, and diverse perspectives from multiple social locations, critical pedagogy views dominant knowledge policies as a direct assault on its goals.
