'Exegetical Essays' is a collection of thirteen biblical studies. The purpose of each is to fill a gap in New Testament research or to offer alternate understandings of familiar passages. The second edition of these 'Essays' incorporates corrections and updated documentation, and presents three new studies. The order of the articles follows as closely as possible the canonical biblical text. The book commences with a consideration of the biblical-theological method, followed by an Old Testament essay, and then proceeds through the Gospels, Paul and Revelation, and concludes with review articles of two recent notable books.
This insightful work amply demonstrates Fee's mastery of the exegetical task and illustrates the goal of exegesis in the service of both academy and church. He explores a wide range of concerns for readers and interpreters of the New Testament.
For years, Douglas Stuart's Old Testament Exegesis has been one of the most popular ways to learn how to perform exegesis—the science and art of interpreting biblical texts properly for understanding as well as proclamation. This new edition includes a major revision and expansion of online and other resources for doing biblical research and updates past editions by including a helpful configuration of the format for the exegesis process. Stuart provides guidance for full exegesis as well as for a quicker approach specifically tailored to the task of preaching. A glossary of terms explains the sometimes-bewildering language of biblical scholarship, and a list of frequent errors guides the student in avoiding common mistakes. No exegetical guide for the Old Testament has been more widely used in training ministers and students to be faithful, careful interpreters of Scripture.
In this illuminating festschrift, sixteen well-known evangelical scholars celebrate the work of a man who has greatly contributed to Evangelical biblical scholarship as we know it today. G. K. Beale is renowned for his studies that explore how the writers of the New Testament used the Old Testament Scriptures in their letters, Gospels, narrative, and apocalypse. These collected essays, written by both colleagues and former students, reveal the immense appreciation that he has garnered among scholars and exegetes of all kinds.
"Exegesis has ethical dimensions. This is the case for the Bible, which has a foundational status in traditional perspectives that is simultaneously contested in the modern world. This innovative essay collection, largely about Hebrew Bible/Old Testament texts, is written by an international team - all Doktorkinder of a pioneer in this area, Professor John Barton, whose 70th birthday this volume celebrates. With interdisciplinary angles, the essays highlight the roles and responsibilities of the biblical scholar, often located professionally between religious and secular domains. This reflects a broader reality: all readers of texts are engaged ethically in the public square of ideas. Contributors are Alma Brodersen, S. Min Chun, Katharine Dell, Anselm C. Hagedorn, Christian Hofreiter, Andrew P. Langley, Aulikki Nahkola, James E. Patrick, Laura Quick, Benjamin Sargent, and Kris Sonek"--
The third edition of this handbook provides a step-by-step guide to writing an exegetical paper on the New Testament. It takes into account the latest advances in methodology as well as resources. 10 illustrations.
William Sanday (1843-1920) is best known today perhaps for his editing of a now classic work on the Synoptic Gospels and his co-authorship of a still-important commentary on the book of Romans (ICC). However, this great Oxford scholar also produced a large number of other important books and other writings. This volume, the first in the new Trinity Academic Press sub-series, Classics in Biblical and Theological Studies, gathers together in an accessible form a number of Sanday's important articles in the areas of method, language and exegesis. In the section on method, Sanday has articles on biblical criticism and interpretation. His writings on language include his responses in his dispute with A. Roberts. The section on exegesis touches on interpretation of the parables, understanding the son of man, issues in Acts 15, and, perhaps most importantly, his dispute with W. Ramsay. This is an important collection of essays by an important but now unfortunately often overlooked scholar of a previous generation.
