En el contexto actual de la sociedad del conocimiento, las universidades como actores de la cooperación al desarrollo, desempeñan un papel determinante y estratégico en la formación integral de las personas, la transferencia de tecnologías y el fomento del desarrollo sostenible. Con esteopósito, la publicación del presente libro pretende promover el debate, el análisis científico y la sensibilización sobre los problemas y las demandas de la sociedad civil, en base al Estado del Bienestar y la respuesta a ello de las políticas sociales. Para ello, se ha planteado una primera aproximación en su tratamiento, desde la realidad española y colombiana, en el ámbito de sus experiencias y de los retos de un desarrollo político e institucional, moderno y de calidad.
Los países del sur de Europa que, como España, han desarrollado tardíamente sus instituciones públicas de bienestar se han visto envueltos en procesos de repliegue antes de que alcanzaran cotas equiparables en extensión y fortaleza. Este libro examina esos cambios en el Estado de Bienestar y sus efectos sobre las desigualdades en la sociedad española entre 1980 y el año 2000. Un conjunto de especialistas en sociología vinculados al Seminario de Análisis de Políticas Sociales (SAPS) de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, en base a un esquema común, pone en relación la dependencia mutua para la gobernabilidad entre política social y estructura social; entre el potencial constitutivo y modulador de las desigualdades por parte de las políticas sociales, y la estructura dinámica de la desigualdad en su sentido más omnicomprensivo (esferas de acción social, ejes de desigualdad y actores colectivos). Mediante la lectura de toda la obra -que es más que una mera adjunción de capítulos al utilizar el mismo esquema interpretativo y tratar un hilo conductor común- no sólo se obtiene una amplia descripción de las viejas y nuevas políticas sociales tanto en clave normativa como institucional, sino que además, se suministra una base de análisis para comprender de forma rigurosa y crítica las tendencias de futuro en el desarrollo de la política social y de las desigualdades. En definitiva, constituye una sólida contribución al debate necesario sobre los impactos de las políticas sociales más allá de una supuesta acción correctora.

In fact, Americans have desired less inequality for decades, and McCall's book explains why. Americans become most concerned about inequality in times of inequitable growth, when they view the rich as prospering while opportunities for good jobs, fair pay and high quality education are restricted for everyone else. Acts of organized violence are not necessarily of human nature, but they are endogenous events arising within the an intrinsic part evolution of complex systems of social interaction. To be sure, all wars have features in common - people are killed and property is destroyed - but in their origin wars are likely to be at least as different as the social structures from which they arise. Consequently, it is unlikely that there can be a simple theory of the causes of war or the maintenance of peace. The fact that wars are historical events need not discourage us. On the contrary, we should focus our understanding of the dimensions of each conflict, or classes of conflict, on the conjuncture of causes at hand. It follows that the study of conflict must be an interdisciplinary one. It is or a penchant for eclecticism that leads to that conclusion, but the not humility multi-dimensionality of war itself.
Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach
