This book is based on the proceedings of the Second Annual Education Conference of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), entitled “Essentials of School Education in the United Arab Emirates” held on October 3–4, 2011. The Second Annual Education Conference tackled the essentials of school education in the UAE through the examination of various issues including the role of national policies and legislation in developing education systems; the relationship between Emirati society and the education process; domestic and international pedagogical philosophies; fundamentals of teacher training and student development; curricula reform; the role of technology in the advancement of education; and fundamentals necessary to ensure standards of educational excellence in the UAE. This Conference came as a continuation of the vision adopted by the ECSSR that seeks to raise the quality of education, examine future developments and identify obstacles that may impede educational progress in the country. In addition to organizing past seminars, panel sessions and lectures that dealt with educational issues and publishing material on the subject, the ECSSR has formed a strategic outlook specifically for education in the UAE, and the Arabian Gulf region in general, and has undertaken the responsibility of tackling all issues and problems related to this topic. This strategic outlook for education adopted by the ECSSR is inspired by the leadership in the country, which considers advancing education as the engine of national development and seeks to raise the standard of education in the country to be among the five most advanced educational systems in the world. Therefore, the advancement of education, in quantity and quality, has been at the forefront of development in the country in recognition of it being the key to the knowledge economy and guarantees national progress. In addition, the various strategic development plans drafted by the government depend almost completely on the quality of national education in the coming decades. The sessions of this Conference and the ensuing discussions and comments compiled in this book have highlighted the importance of research and development related to education—a role that the ECSSR proudly undertakes through its unique events, seminars and lectures attended by some of the best minds in the world of education.
This book provides an overview of the evolution of education in the United Arab Emirates from its humble beginnings in palm frond huts, to today's proliferation of prestigious international schools and global university branch campuses. The chapter authors are academic experts who have extensive first-hand experience of contemporary developments in the country's various educational sectors. The book addresses innovations and transformations in Early Childhood Education, Higher Education, K-12 Schooling, Language Education in Arabic and English, Quality Assurance, Special Needs, STEM Education, and Teacher Education and Professional Development.
This is the first international and interdisciplinary handbook to offer a comprehensive and an in-depth overview of findings from contemporary research, theory, and practice in early childhood language education in various parts of the world and with different populations. The contributions by leading scholars and practitioners are structured to give a survey of the topic, highlight its importance, and provide a critical stance. The book covers preschool ages, and looks at children belonging to diverse ethno-linguistic groups and experiencing different histories and pathways of their socio-linguistic and socio-cultural development and early education. The languages under the scope of this handbook are identified by the contributors as immigrant languages, indigenous, endangered, heritage, regional, minority, majority, and marginalized, as well as foreign and second languages, all of which are discussed in relation to early language education as the key concept of the handbook. In this volume, “early language education” will refer to any kind of setting, both formal and informal (e.g. nursery, kindergarten, early childhood education centers, complementary early schooling etc.) in which language learning within a context of children's sociolinguistic diversity takes place before elementary school.

The chapters in this volume do not represent the whole of the Middle East and North Africa, as such a collection would have been too large for one volume. Rather, the selection here is intended to present different perspectives on a range of educational issues, relevant to a particular focus or country, or common to a number of countries in the area. There is no overarching theme beyond that which is common to most of the countries in this area; such as modernity versus tradition; the spread of education effecting sociological changes - most pronounced in the rural and tribal areas; the changing fortunes and roles of women; the aspiration and expectation of youth; and the state having become the major player in providing education. These are all shared by most of the countries represented here.
The UAE has long prioritized education within its development plans, with the aim of creating a diverse and competitive economy based on improvements in the efficiency and quality of educational output. This book examines the various challenges of educational advancement on which success over the coming decades depends. Such challenges include diversifying the student population, schools, and curricula; improving the quality of the school environment; overcoming the limitations of traditional methods of education; creating effective approaches to development, evaluation, and assessment; improving educational guidance for students; and achieving greater family involvement in the educational process in an attempt to promote high levels of educational attainment, self-confidence, and a sense of citizenship. By analyzing the present state and future challenges to education in the UAE, this book is essential for all those interested in the development of education in the Gulf, and the wider Middle East.
Education in the 21st century has at its core the promotion of original thought, creativity and innovation. The move away from rote learning and repetitive memorization of facts has helped engender a new culture of inspiring children to use their imaginations to find solutions to problems, and subsequently develop a confidence in one's decision-making, which will be a tremendous advantage throughout life. In Abu Dhabi, the emphasis on innovation is embedded in a number of strategic policies, including a call to build "an environment that fosters innovation, cultivates a healthy risk-taking culture and strengthens the research and development capacity" in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, and a call for an economic model of growth "driven by knowledge and innovation" in the Vision 2021. However, how does an education establishment begin the process of teaching creative learnings and problem solving? What skills are required by teaching staff and what availability of equipment is essential to this task?
This book, which includes a number of research papers presented at the 6th Annual Education Conference held at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) from October 27-28, 2015, seeks to provide a comprehensive vision of the educational process in relation to development. It presents a host of useful ideas that contribute to entrenching the positive link between the requirements of education and the requirements of development in the United Arab Emirates. Through the interrelationship between innovation and skill, on the one hand, and academic cognitive content, on the other, the UAE educational system is counting on graduating nationals who are efficient, positive and able to be harmonious and flexible in dealing with the latest technological requirements and challenges of the labor market. The book’s chapters highlight the importance of communication between scientific research and the public and private sectors to serve the comprehensive development, both physically and culturally. The book also discusses the important role of vocational education and training at the level of disciplines, curricula and qualification programs, while promoting the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies to enhance the competitiveness of graduates when they join the labor market and to motivate them to engage in private sector projects.
The UAE's successive breakthroughs in development since its establishment by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God rest his soul in peace) are a result of the country's continuous effort to enhance its education sector. Due to the global impact of rapid technological developments, the UAE understands the imperative need to advance and modernize education, to prepare its citizens for the demands of the future labor market. The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) is committed to supporting the vision and strategies of our wise leadership so that they may be realized on the ground. As education plays a vital role in achieving the UAE’s current goals of sustainable development, the ECSSR organized the 9th Annual Education Conference, ‘Advanced Education in a Changing World: The Education Strategy of the United Arab Emirates’. This book documents the proceedings of the Conference. Chapter one discusses the topic of leadership and innovative education, demonstrating some of its models and future trends. Chapter two looks at how the human brain functions, and ways that optimal educational opportunities can be provided to meet future requirements locally and internationally. Chapter three explores methods to prevent bullying through mentoring and counselling sessions, and provides an in-depth analysis of some measures that have been developed and adopted in this regard. Chapter four examines the Australian model of education with a focus on recent developments in the Australian educational context, efforts to establish professional standards for teachers, and teaching professional assessment instruments to measure graduating teachers’ attainment of standards. The chapter also highlights the Australian examination system, and its impact on the teaching profession. The chapter concludes with a discussion of some of the consequences of the above in the context of the educational experience in the United Arab Emirates. Chapter five sheds light on the German education system, with a particular focus on its outcomes and achievements, as well as the challenges facing it. The chapter also explores a number of implications for continuous development and strategic planning for the future, in order to design, develop and implement an innovative educational system.
Most experts would agree that creating a first-class, modern education system is essential to achieve comprehensive national development. To this end, the United Arab Emirates has taken initiatives and launched projects that focus on improving the education system in the country, linking them to development, as per international standards, and to the needs of the labor market. As the UAE seeks to implement its ambitious development plans, all concerned parties must focus on enabling the education system to realize these goals. To help serve the UAE's national education and development objectives, the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) held its 6th Annual Education Conference, titled "Education and Development: Toward a Modern Education System in the UAE," on October 27-28, 2015. Based on the conference's proceedings, this book identifies and analyzes the many challenges linking education to development, including the resistance among students to enroll in vocational education and training courses; building better links between the private sector and higher education and research institutions; and ensuring that the education system meets the needs of the labor market. The scholarly ideas presented within are followed by practical recommendations to develop a modern education system in the UAE.
