This English translation of Friedrich Nietzsche in seinen Werken offers a rare, intimate view of the philosopher by Lou Salomé, a free-thinking, Russian-born intellectual to whom Nietzsche proposed marriage at only their second meeting. Published in 1894 as its subject languished in madness, Salomé's book rode the crest of a surge of interest in Nietzsche's iconoclastic philosophy. She discusses his writings and such biographical events as his break with Wagner, attempting to ferret out the man in the midst of his works. Salomé's provocative conclusion -- that Nietzsche's madness was the inevitable result of his philosophical views -- generated considerable controversy. Nietzsche's sister, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, dismissed the book as a work of fantasy. Yet the philosopher's longtime acquaintance Erwin Rohde wrote, "Nothing better or more deeply experienced or perceived has ever been written about Nietzsche." Siegfried Mandel's extensive introduction examines the circumstances that brought Lou Salomé and Nietzsche together and the ideological conflicts that drove them apart.
"This book accompanies an international exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Oskar Reinhart Foundation in Winterthur, one of the finest collections of German, Austrian and Swiss art in Europe." "Oskar Reinhart (1885 - 1965) presented his extraordinary collection of Northern Romantic and Realist art to the town of Winterthur, establishing a museum with over five hundred paintings and several thousand drawings. The collection opened to the public in 1951 but still remains little known outside Switzerland - paintings from the Foundation are lent only on rare occasions and the Reinhart collection has never been shown abroad." "With introductory essays and detailed texts on each artist, this book surveys a rich pictorial tradition, ranging from the quiet introspection of the Romantic era and the gentle charm of Biedermeier to the robust art of Realist and Symbolist painters at the end of the century. Paintings by major artists (including Friedrich, Runge, Menzel, Bocklin, Liebermann and Hodler) are discussed alongside works by less familiar figures whose work deserves greater recognition."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "The book traces the process of creating of a new German memory of the Holocaust after the fall of the Wall. Combining theoretical analysis with historical case studies, the book revisits crucial debates and controversial issues out of which Germany's new 'memory culture' emerged as a collective project and work in progress"--
