This book describes everyday practices of life in changing Arctic winter conditions. The authors explore the contemporary and situated outdoor practices in different work settings in Finnish Lapland and investigate how, for example, tourism, reindeer herding, cattle breeding and urban snow management adapt to the physically limiting or enabling features of cold temperatures, snow and ice. The book also highlights individual and societal adjustments to such harsh conditions and their seasonal changes in mobility, including winter cycling, use of snow mobiles and walking with studded shoes. The impact of a warming climate is a great concern for those utilising the enabling qualities of winter weather. The need, then, for continuous adaptation in everyday practices of work and mobility will increase in the future.
The use of renewable energies and energy saving and efficiency are needs of global society and universities. Universities have a large responsibility and social impact, as they are an example and engine of social change. Universities, in the European context, must be at the forefront of ESA processes, seeking to be at the same level as, and preferably higher than, the rest of society, seeking a goal of 20% renewable energy for 2020 and, in the longer term, greater energy efficiency based on a diverse use of renewable energy and studying the feasibility of other energy processes (cogeneration, trigeneration, etc.). The application of renewable energies and energy efficiency allow universities to make significant savings in their costs and contribute to sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Actions in pursuit of these goals in addition to the objective of energy saving should promote research and form an example for the university community. This book aims to advance the contribution of energy saving and the use of renewable energies in order to achieve more sustainable universities.
Entrepreneurship is defined in different fields with definitions ranging from a specific perspective such as starting a business to a broader perspective such as a process of establishing new social, economic, environmental, institutional, cultural and/or scientific environments. There has been some movement toward entrepreneurship in STEM education through hackathons and makerspaces, but they tend to be limited to informal settings. In higher education, there seems to be a border line between business schools and education departments. This book aims to remove the borders between the Business Schools and the Department of Education and help Business Schools to develop their educational practices further and help Education Departments to develop their knowledge of entrepreneurship from its formal discipline. The purpose of this book is to bring together experts from STEM education and the formal discipline of entrepreneurship to explore the role of STEM in everyday life through an entrepreneurial lens and show how this integration can broaden STEM education practices.
The blue economy is a widely used concept in policy circles; however, people across a wide spectrum have a peripheral understanding of the phenomenon. At the moment, there are several conflicting understandings of the blue economy but no universally accepted definition and veritable measures.
