Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 1 of 2 IT was not foreseen by the American contributor to these Lectures, that his additions would have constituted, in a comparatively short period, the larger part of the entire work. His proportion is, now, upwards of fourteen hundred pages - enough, in amount of matter and variety of topic, to form a separate treatise one as large, if not as comprehensive, as some systems of medicine which find willing and instructed readers. The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Excerpt from First Lines of the Practice of Physic, Vol. 1 of 2 While I t us deliver my work in its now more improved state, with the hopes that it may be Of use to others as well as to those who hear my Lectures, I must at the same time observe, that it presents a system which is in many respects new, and therefore I apprehend it to be not only proper, but necessary, that I should explain here Upon what grounds, and from what considerations, this' has been attempted. In the first place, I apprehend that, in every branch of sci ence with respect to which new facts are daily acquired, and these consequently giving occasion to new reflections, which correct the principles formerly adopted, it is necessary from time to time, to reform and renew the whole system, with all the addi tions and amendments which it has received and is then capable of'. That at present, this is requisite with regard to the Science of Medicine, will, I believe, readily occur to every person who at all thinks for himself, and is acquainted with the Systems which have hitherto prevailed. While, therefore, I attempt this, I think it may be allowable, and upon this occasion even proper, that I' should offer some remarks on the principal Sys tems of Medicine which have of late prevailed in Europe, and that I should take notice of the present state of Physic as it is influenced by these. Such remarks, I hope, may be of some use to those. Who attempt to improve their knowledge by the reading of books. Excerpt from Elements of the Theory and Practice of Physic: Designed for the Use of Students In this work the main object of the author has been to unite general views of disease with the detail of symptoms and treatment. He has rather gone into greater length in the former department, because the works commonly in the hands of medical students do not, to the best of his knowledge, contain any exposition of those leading pathological doctrines which it is his object to inculcate, and which he believes to be essential to the successful treatment of disease, by those at least who have not yet enjoyed the advantages Of experience. Excerpt from Elements of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2: For the Use of Students; With Plates Numerous circumstances combine to render neces sary an American Epitome of Practical Surgery; those members of the medical profession who, by talent and experience, are best qualified to compose it, are fully occupied by other duties, and indifferent to that species of reputation which might accrue from such a publicai tion; the labour has therefore, in the present instance, devolved upon one in many respects inadequate to the performance, and fully sensible of the imperfections of his work.
