Excerpt from Elements of Electro-Metallurgy With all my assistance from others, superadded to the ardour with which the extraordinary character of the subject must necessarily inspire every person entering upon it, the variety of subjects comprised in the present work is so great, and so far removed from my daily professional avocations, that it will doubtless not appear strange for those who entirely devote their time to particular arts, to discover errors and imperfections. As these subjects, however, are only append ages, or extraneous matter, to electro-metallurgy, of which this work professes alone to treat, I trust the indulgence of the public will be extended to their criticism; but let the purely electro-metallurgical details be thoroughly examined, minutely sifted, and purged of their errors and imperfections, that at length truth may be exalted and electro-metallurgy triumph. Excerpt from Electro-Metallurgy The author's aim in this book has been to give a brief and clear account of the industrial developments of electro-metallurgy, in language that can be understood by those whose acquaintance with either chemical or electrical science may be but slight. No attempt therefore has been made to discuss the theoretical side of the subject. The meanings of the few technical terms and expressions that have almost necessarily crept into the book will be found in a glossary on p.299, where they can easily be referred to by readers. The facts and figures recorded in the book relate to the position of the electro-metallurgical industries at the end of 1906, unless otherwise stated. The developments in some of these industries are, however, extremely rapid, and allowance must be made for the difference in date when comparing the figures given with those published more recently. The patent literature of electro-metallurgy is unusually extensive and voluminous, and no useful purpose would have been served by digging deep into it. The author has therefore confined himself to descriptions of apparatus and processes which have once received practical trial upon an industrial scale, or which are now in commercial use. Excerpt from The Electro-Metallurgy of Steel Although electro-metallurgy is still in the early stages of development, no apology is needed for the devotion of a volume to the application of electricity to the melting and treatment of steel.
