Excerpt from Modern Electric Railway Motors: A Discussion of Current Practice in Electric Railway Motor Construction, Maintenance, and Repair In presenting this work for public consideration the writer desires to impress upon the reader that it is intended more particularly for those who have just entered or are about to enter active work in the electric railway field. The object of the book, in short, is to show how electric railway motors are made to-day and why they are made so. The electric railway field is one which is subject to rapid changes of method, and even during the process of preparing this short work for the press, it has been necessary to make substantial changes in text to bring it down to date. Ideas and improvements in electric railway work are occurring almost daily, and what is good practice to-day is history to-morrow, a fact which the reader should bear in mind. The work is largely of a descriptive character. A few general principles are laid down, illustrated by present and past practice and comparisons of merits. For the benefit of those who are actively employed in handling or repairing railway motors, a chapter on that subject has been added, while for those whom the subject interests from the designer's standpoint, the concluding chapter of the book has been prepared. With the exception of the final chapter the book can be easily read and understood by anyone who has had a thorough grounding in Ohm's law.
