This volume commemorates the quatercentenary of Don Quijote (Part I, 1604-05), widely acknowledged to be the 'first modern novel'. Through Don Quijote, his Exemplary Novels and other major works, Cervantes, Spain's master novelist, has for centuries shaped and profoundly influenced the different literatures and cultures of numerous countries throughout the world. Containing chapters written in both English and Spanish by leading scholars worldwide, this book deals with topics as fundamental and diverse as contested discourses in Don Quijote, psychology and comic characters in Golden-Age literature, the title of Cervantes' master novel, and Cervantes, Shakespeare and the birth of metatheatre. A special issue of the journal Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

The bibliographic listings include various editions of plays, followed by references to the plays in anthologies, collections, or periodicals. In the second half of the 20th century, immigration to Latin America from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia also proved influential, and theater became a means of social protest. In its exploration of puppetry and animation as the performative media of choice for mastering the art of illusion, To Embody the Marvelous engages with early modern notions of wonder in religious, artistic, and social contexts. From jointed, wood-carved figures of Christ, saintly marionettes that performed hagiographical dramas, experimental puppets and automata in Cervantes' Don Quixote, and the mechanical sets around which playwright Calderón de la Barca devised secular magic shows to deconstruct superstitions, these historical and fictional artifacts reenvisioned religious, artistic, and social notions that led early modern society to critically wrestle with enchantment and disenchantment. The use of animated performance objects in Spanish theatrical contexts during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries became one of the most effective pedagogical means to engage with civil society. Regardless of social strata, readers and spectators alike were caught up in a paradigm shift wherein belief systems were increasingly governed by reason—even though the discursive primacy of supernatural doxa and Christian wonder remained firmly entrenched. Thanks to their potential for motion, religious and profane puppets, automata, and mechanical stage props deployed a rationalized sense of wonder that illustrates the relationship between faith and reason, reevaluates the boundaries of fiction in art and entertainment cultures, acknowledges the rise of science and technology, and questions normative authority.
Although Pedro Calderón de la Barca was one of the greatest and most prolific playwrights of Spain's Golden Age, most of his nonallegorical comedias—118 in all—have remained unknown. Robert ter Horst presents here the first full-length study of these works, a sustained, meditative analysis dealing with more than 80 plays, conveying a sense of the whole of Calderón's secular theater. To approach so vast a body of literature, Mr. ter Horst examines the meaning and function in Calderón of three broad subjects—myth, honor, and history—the warp threads across which the playwright weaves a subtle tapestry of contrasts, dualities, and conflicts: the private person versus the public person, the inner realm versus the outer, masculine against feminine, poet against prince. The Calderón who emerges is a consciously consummate artist whose lifelong study was the passions of the human mind and body. In addition, he is seen as a synthesizer of his Spanish literary heritage and especially as a brilliant adapter of Cervantes' insights to the stage. Robert ter Horst's profound and far-ranging analysis sheds light on many fine works previously neglected and finds new depths in such supreme achievements as No hay cosa como callar, El segundo Escipión, and La vida es suefio.
