Die Eisenbahn gilt weiterhin als ein 'faszinierendes Phänomen' (Europäische Kommission-DG TREN, 2004) und steht im Spannungsfeld von alt und neu. Diese erste industrielle Transporttechnologie bildet(e) nicht nur den Auslöser einer in diesem Ausmaß zuvor nicht gekannten Mobilität, sondern beeinflusst(e) auch das gesamte Leben sowohl auf gesellschaftlicher als auch individueller Ebene, auf dem Land wie in den Städten. Darüber hinaus symbolisiert(e) sie wie kaum eine andere technische Innovation den Prozess der Industrialisierung und Modernisierung. Insbesondere im Gefolge eines erweiterten Kulturbegriffs eröffnen sich Möglichkeiten, über technikimmanente Geschichtsschreibungen hinauszugehen und neu über das Verhältnis zwischen Eisenbahn und Kultur nachzudenken. Um derartige, mannigfaltige Zusammenhänge erkennen und insbesondere reflektieren zu lernen, wurde im Jahr 2001 an der IFF (Wien) eine international besetzte Workshopreihe "Eisenbahn/Kultur - Railway/Culture" veranstaltetet. Der vorliegende Sonderband dokumentiert nahezu alle Beiträge - bildet somit das äußerst breite Spektrum dieses Themas ab - und soll zu weiterführenden Forschungen jenseits disziplinärer Grenzen anregen. Railway continues to be a 'fascinating phenomenon' (European Commission-DG TREN, 2004) and represent a mixture of ancient and modern. This first industrial transportation technology caused not only a mobility never known before, but it shaped public and private life in the country as well as in cities. Above that, as does no other technical innovation it symbolizes the process of industrialization and modernization. Especially in the wake of an extended notion of culture there are potentialities to surpass an inherent history of technology and to re-think about the relationship between railway and culture. Therefore, in 2001 the workshop-series "Eisenbahn/Kultur - Railway/Culture" was organized at the IFF in Vienna (Austria). This special volume brings together nearly all papers and depicts the very wide range of the subject. Furthermore, this anthology will encourage to continue such research topics beyond all disciplinary boarders.
In Cultural Analysis, the fourth collection of his essays posthumously published by Transaction, Wildavsky argues that American politics, public law, and public administration are the contested terrain of rival, inescapable political cultures. Analysts of American politics distinguish liberals from conservatives and Democrats from Republicans, but do not explain how these categories of political allegiance develop, maintain themselves, or change. Wildavsky offers a cultural-functional explanation for ideological and partisan coherence and realignment. Wildavsky also felt that these dualisms did not adequately capture the ideological and partisan variation he observed on the political landscape. Like others, he detected another recurring strain of political allegiance: that of classical liberalism or libertarianism. People of this political stripe valued freedom more than equality (the primary political value of contemporary liberals), and also more than order, the primary political value of conservatives.
Until now we have only had relatively narrow economic studies comparing investments in railways with investments in other fields of individual economies. An original history of the railroad in the Old South that challenges the accepted understanding of economic and industrial growth in antebellum America. Drawing from both familiar and overlooked sources, such as the personal diaries of Southern travelers, papers and letters from civil engineers, corporate records, and contemporary newspaper accounts, Aaron W. Marrs skillfully expands on the conventional business histories that have characterized scholarship in this field. He situates railroads in the fullness of antebellum life, examining how slavery, technology, labor, social convention, and the environment shaped their evolution. A sweeping biography that opens a window onto the gilded age of Jewish philanthropy. Baron Maurice de Hirsch was one of the emblematic figures of the nineteenth century. Above all, he was the most influential Jewish philanthropist of his time. Today Hirsch is less well known than the Rothschilds, or his gentile counterpart Andrew Carnegie, yet he was, to his contemporaries, the very embodiment of the gilded age of Jewish philanthropy. Hirsch's life provides a singular entry point for understanding Jewish philanthropy and politics in the late nineteenth century, a period when, as now, private benefactors played an outsize role in shaping the collective fate of Jewish communities. Hirsch's vast fortune derived from his role in creating the first rail line linking Western Europe with the Ottoman Empire, what came to be known as the Orient Express. Socializing with the likes of the Austrian crown prince Rudolph and "Bertie," Prince of Wales, Hirsch rose to the pinnacle of European aristocratic society, but also found himself the frequent target of vicious antisemitism. This was an era when what it meant to be Jewish—and what it meant to be European—were undergoing dramatic changes. Baron Hirsch was at the center of these historic shifts. While in his time Baron Hirsch was the subject of widespread praise, enraged political commentary, and conspiracy theories alike, his legacy is often overlooked. In late nineteenth-century Mexico the Mexican populace was fascinated with the country’s booming railroad network. Newspapers and periodicals were filled with art, poetry, literature, and social commentaries exploring the symbolic power of the railroad. As a symbol of economic, political, and industrial modernization, the locomotive served to demarcate a nation’s status in the world. However, the dangers of locomotive travel, complicated by the fact that Mexico’s railroads were foreign owned and operated, meant that the railroad could also symbolize disorder, death, and foreign domination. In The Civilizing Machine Michael Matthews explores the ideological and cultural milieu that shaped the Mexican people’s understanding of technology. Intrinsically tied to the Porfiriato, the thirty-five-year dictatorship of Gen. Porfirio Díaz, the booming railroad network represented material progress in a country seeking its place in the modern world. Matthews discloses how the railroad’s development represented the crowning achievement of the regime and the material incarnation of its mantra, “order and progress.” The Porfirian administration evoked the railroad in legitimizing and justifying its own reign, while political opponents employed the same rhetorical themes embodied by the railroads to challenge the manner in which that regime achieved economic development and modernization. As Matthews illustrates, the multiple symbols of the locomotive reflected deepening social divisions and foreshadowed the conflicts that eventually brought about the Mexican Revolution.
