First Published in 1998. This is Volume VI of twenty-eight in the Sociology of Education series. Post-war plans for the reshaping of the school system in France have succeeded and superseded each other with confusing rapidity. They reflect the vigorous attempts of intelligent Frenchmen to construct an educational system that will be adequate for the resurgent, industrial, prosperous, democratic country whose mission as a model of civilization and enlightenment they still proclaim. Despite these measures dissatisfaction with the school system, its syllabuses and its methods continue to be felt acutely, with the principles of reform have been lengthily debated by the various professional, social, political and religious groups in France. The resulting legislation has brought about changes with which nobody is content. A major purpose of this book has been to allow the various protagonists to speak for themselves.
This volume sets out to examine the ways in which an equality between the sexes is constructed, conceptualised, imagined or realised in early modern France, a period and a country which produced some of the earliest theorisations on equality. In so doing, it aims to contribute towards the development of the history of equality as an intellectual category within the history of political thought, and to situate "the woman question" within that history. The eleven chapters in the volume span the fields of political theory, philosophy, literature, history and history of ideas, bringing together literary scholars, historians, philosophers and scholars of political thought, and examining an extensive range of primary sources. Whilst most of the chapters focus on the conceptualisation of a moral, metaphysical or intellectual equality between the sexes, space is also given to concrete examples of a de facto gender equality in operation. The volume is aimed at scholars and graduate students of political thought, history of philosophy, women’s history and gender studies alike. It aims to throw light on the history of Western ideas of equality and difference, questions which continue to preoccupy cultural historians, philosophers, political theorists and feminist critics.
The African and Caribbean Historical Novel in French: A Quest for Identity examines the historical novel that has emerged in Francophone Africa and the Caribbean since the late 1930s and includes such writers as Edouard Glissant of Martinique and Paul Hazoumé of Benin. This study underscores the ideological differences that distinguish the African and Caribbean historical novel from the classical nineteenth-century European historical novel. Through a post-colonial reading, the author examines the influence of Negritude on these writers and calls for an Afrocentric approach.
