E Pluribus Unum: (From Many, One) is an epic story (1861–1876) chronicling the lives of two individuals. One a black man, Jason Ruth, born into a life of perpetual slavery; the other was a white woman, Rebecca Billings, the daughter of Henry Billings, master of the Rosewood Plantation, born into a pampered life of privilege as a member of the Southern aristocracy. Two people – one black, the other white – whose preordained statuses in life were at diametrically opposite ends of the South's Antebellum society. Two people with absolutely nothing in common yet two people whose lives were inexorably linked due to the lust of Rebecca's father, Henry Billings, for his black slave, Ruth, Jason's mother. Henry Billings's coupling (white master with his black female slave), a common and socially accepted practice in the slave–holding South, resulted in the birth of Mandy (Jason and Rebecca's sister). While Jason and Rebecca are not related by blood, Jason (who had been born before his mother, Ruth, caught the eye of the "massa") and Rebecca each shared a deep and enduring love for his and her only surviving sibling, their common link, their sister, Mandy. The novel tells of Rebecca's life while raising a child of mixed blood in the South during the Civil War and during Reconstruction. It tells of Jason's life as a member of the Massachusetts 54th Infantry Division and his service as a member of the United States Army's 10th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers). The novel examines three coexisting nineteenth–century American cultures: the recently defeated South's response to the post–Civil War's era of Reconstruction, the former black slaves who are attempting to adjust to life as freedmen, and the noble nomadic hunter–gatherer society of the Plains Indians fighting to defend and to maintain their way of life.
Hispanics and the Future of America presents details of the complex story of a population that varies in many dimensions, including national origin, immigration status, and generation. E Pluribus Venom collects a large body of work produced by Shepard Fairey and presented at the Jonathan Levine Gallery during his massive exhibition in the summer of 2007. The title, which translates Out of many, poison is derived from E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one) an early motto adopted by the U.S. Government which appears on U.S. currency. The artists thesis is that many becoming one, or a loss of power and influence of the individual in favor of homogeny is a symptom of a society in decline. The book is comprised of artworks designed to question the symbols and methods of the American machine and American dream and also celebrate those who oppose blind nationalism and war. Some of Faireys works use currency motifs or a Norman Rockwell aesthetic to employ the graphic language of the subjects they critique. Other works use a blend of Art Nouveau, hippie, and revolutionary propaganda styles to celebrate subjects advocating peace.

Phineas Taylor Barnum lived from 1810 until 1891, and in the eighty-one years of his life he created show business as we know it. In E Pluribus Barnum, Bluford Adams investigates the influence Barnum had on American popular culture of the nineteenth century, and expands our understanding of the ways he continues to influence us today. Beginning with a discussion of Barnum's early shows, Adams demonstrates the dynamic interplay between Barnum's increasingly "respectable" aspirations for his entertainments and his active cultivation of middle-class sensibilities in his audiences. In his discussion of the 1850-51 concert tour of the "Swedish Nightingale" Jenny Lind, Adams explores the role played by women's rights and class issues in Barnum's management of these concerts. Barnum's American Museum and the "moral dramas" presented in its theater are examined, as well as the later circuses. Adams relates the rise of Barnum to the emergence of a new U.S. society, one riven by conflicts over slavery, feminism, immigration, and capitalism, and considers his career as a crucial moment in the on-going struggle over the politics of U.S. commercial entertainments.
