This volume contains the proceedings of the 5th workshop on 'Dynamic Perception' which was held on November 18 - 19, 2004, at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen. As in the previ-ous meetings, the conference is characterised by its high degree of in-terdisciplinarity. The presentations cover the fields of computer science, psychology, neuroscience as well as biology. The common denominator of all contributions consists in the observation that the sensory systems of man, animals and robots have to solve similar tasks such as goal-directed behaviour, orientation within a 3D world or object identification, to name just a few.

The book provides detailed up to date and authoritative accounts of major areas of infant development. The 11 chapters are subdivided into three sections: Perceptual Development (4 chapters); Cognitive Development (3 chapters); Social Interaction, Early Language and Emotion (4 chapters). Schachtel shared with his great contemporary David Rapaport the goal of scientifically reframing the psychoanalytic understanding of personality. Experiential Foundations of Rorschach's Test, first published in 1966, is in one sense Schachtel's extended dialogue with Rapaport (in the guise of Schachtel's interlocutor) about this ambitious task. In the course of his brilliant and lucid meditation on this topic, Schachtel attempted far more than the simple explication of particular test responses.
