ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 351 In this 351ST issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale "THE STORY OF THE INVISIBLE KINGDOM”. ONCE upon a time, long, long ago and far, far away, in a little house half-way up the mountain-side, and about a mile from the other houses of the village, there lived with his old father a young man called George. There was just enough land belonging to the house to enable the father and son to live free from care. Behind the house a wood began, the oak trees and beech trees in which were so old that the grandchildren of the people who had planted them had been dead for more than a hundred years. In front of the house there lay a broken old mill-stone—no-one knows how it got there? But anyone sitting on the stone would have a wonderful view of the valley down below, with the river flowing through it, and of the mountains rising on the other side of the river. In the evening, when he had finished his work in the fields, George often sat here for hours at a time dreaming, with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands; and because he cared little for the villagers, but generally went about silent and absorbed like one who is thinking of all sorts of things, the people nicknamed him "George the Dreamer." But he did not mind it at all. The older he grew, the more silent he became, and when at last his old father died, and he had buried him under a great old oak tree, he became quite silent. Then, when he sat on the broken mill-stone, as he did more often than before, and looked down into the lovely valley, and saw how the evening mists came into the valley at one end and slowly climbed the mountains, and how it then became darker and darker, until at last the moon and the stars appeared in the sky in their full glory, a wonderful feeling came into his heart. The waves of the river began to sing, quite softly at first, but gradually louder, until they could be heard quite plainly; and they sang of the mountains, down from which they had come, and of the sea, to which they wished to go, and of the nixies who lived far down at the bottom of the river. Then the forest began to rustle, quite differently from an ordinary forest, and it used to relate the most wonderful tales. The old oak tree especially, which stood at his father's grave, knew far more than all the other trees. The stars, high up in the sky, wanted so much to tumble down into the green forest and the blue water, that they twinkled and sparkled as if they could not bear it any longer. But the angels who stand behind the stars held them firmly in their places, and said: "Stars, stars, don't be foolish! You are much too old to do silly things—many thousand years old, and more. Stay quietly in your places." It was truly a wonderful valley! But it was only George the Dreamer who heard and saw all that. Now, one day as he was sitting on the mill-stone and thinking that he was quite alone in the world, he fell asleep. Then he dreamt that he saw, hanging down from the sky, a golden swing, which was fastened to two stars by silver ropes. In the swing sat a charming Princess, who was swinging so high that each time she touched the sky, then the earth, and then the sky again. Each time the swing came near the earth, the Princess clapped her hands with joy and threw George the Dreamer a rose. But suddenly the ropes broke, and the swing, with the Princess, flew far into the sky, farther and farther, until at last he could see it no longer. Then he woke up, and when he looked round, he saw a great bunch of roses lying beside him on the mill-stone. And so began Geoge’s quest. The quest to find the Princess on the swing. Where did he go, what did he do? What happened to George? Well many things happened, some silly and some serious, but did George find his princess? Well, to find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out! Dickens was known for his incredible imagination and fiery social protest. In Social Dreaming , Elaine Ostry examines how these two qualities are linked through Dickens's use of the fairy tale, a genre that infuses his work. To many Victorians, the fairy tale was not childish: it promoted the imagination and fancy in a materialistic, utilitarian world. It was a way of criticizing society so that everyone could understand. Like Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, Dickens used the fairy tale to promote his ideology. In this first book length study of Dickens's use of the fairy tale as a social tool, Elaine Ostry applies exciting new criticism by Jack Zipes and Maria Tatar, among others, that examines the fairy tale in a socio-historical light to Dickens's major works but also his periodicals-the most popular middle-class publications in Victorian times.
"Our battles do not cover us with riches, with glory. We marry no princesses, gain no kingdoms. We wrap no monsters' tongues in silken handkerchiefs embroidered with the monogram of the beloved, take no trophies which, when later our claims are challenged, we can show the king as proof of our worth and thus gain the prize. The dragons we face are in the mind ." We never learn her name, but we do learn her story. Being sent away from her home village to apprentice with the Wiseman of the Wood is the best thing that ever happened to her. Then she learns that her cousin, a foolish dreamer of a boy, has undertaken a quest that could either bring him a princess and a kingdom or lose him his head. Against her will she gets caught up in his dream a dream that will take her to the far reaches of the kingdom in search of the Water of Life. And although she has been told that the stories of the wise are never told, she learns a lesson that makes her story worth repeating. The seven tales of enchantment in this book range from modern versions of old stories to new stories with common fairytale themes. They take place in the present day and in the mythic past, but they all have something in common. Although there are ogres to be fought and princesses to be won, curses to be broken and quests to be fulfilled, the real challenge each of the heroes must face is personal. And beyond fear, beyond doubt, beyond the consequences of unbearable choice comes the poignant realization that life is what you make it, and contentment means more than "happily ever after."
A Magical Wish...If you were a fairy who could make a big wish, what would your wish be?The River Fairy lives in an enchanting crystal house by the lazy Dream River. What more could this fairy princess possibly want? With the help of a dazzling magical crown, the fairy's most desired wish comes true! Can you guess what her wish might be?This lyrical story reveals the River Fairy's wish through song accompanied by the colorful, whimsical artwork of Anastasia Yatsunenko. Much of the tale follows the tune of the old folk song "Green Grass Grows All Around," and children will love the singsong quality of the story, with an original song, "Dream River Flows All Around." The story concludes with the message that delighting in the innocence of childhood is even more amazing than all the magical things we make up. Childhood is a treasured, magical gift. A story like Beauty and the Beast but with more action and menacing darkness. On the planet Terra when recorded history began, Man coexisted with the Necroms. Necroms were intelligent catlike humanoids. The dawn of this period was known as the First Age of Magic. In the Second Age of Magic, a war broke out between Man and the Necroms and by the middle of the Second Age, Man was nearly wiped from creation. Those who survived fled Wellspring and journeyed across the sea into the unknown, finding new homes and creating fortified domains. In the Third and final Age of Magic, Man established five island kingdoms: Commery, Fletching, Morgog, Swelldom, and Hort. In the First Age of Metal, Man turned from the lost art of magic to the might of weapons as they discovered iron then steel. Large armies were created, and Man fought amongst themselves, forgetting the Necroms into myth. For generations, the wars continued until an arranged marriage between the two strongest kingdoms of Commery and Morgog ceased the bloodshed, and so Man established the first Emperor and Empress and the tradition of Amalgamation. When both the Emperor and Empress of the Five Kingdoms died, the two strongest kingdoms' heirs married and crowned a new dynasty, and so began the Age of Amalgamation. During this age, a witch placed a curse on a girl named Pluck. The curse had been meant for a boy, Prince Edward of Fletching, for stealing the Mystic Rose. Pluck transformed into a Necrom with the Kiss, Edward's first kiss as her only redemption. The Kiss wouldn't be an easy task since showing her face meant her death.
